Cross by ferry to Naxos and you'll notice something the smaller Cyclades islands can't offer: room to roam. This is the biggest island in the group, and its best moments aren't in Chora's alleys but out along the coast and up in the hills — the marble gate of the Portara glowing at sunset, the sand at Agios Prokopios, the mountain village of Apiranthos wrapped in olive groves. A scooter is what turns those postcard names into an actual afternoon.
Naxos was practically built for two wheels. One coastal road strings the beaches together, and a second climbs inland into the Tragea valley, but distances of 10 to 40 kilometres make walking pointless and buses infrequent, especially once you're past Chora. Traffic outside town stays light, roads are wide enough to feel relaxed, and a rental bike gets you to villages and coastlines the bus timetable simply skips. If you want to rent a scooter in Naxos, this is exactly the kind of island where it pays off.
For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is 16, though most rental shops set it higher. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence won't cover you here. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual shop.
A basic 50cc scooter runs 3-10 EUR per day in low season and 15-25 EUR per day in high season. Step up to a 125cc or larger model, or an ATV, and peak-season prices land around 25-40 EUR per day.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and the best scooters go quickly, so book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many island shops close entirely. The sweet spot is May, June, September and October — mild weather, thinner crowds and prices closer to the low-season end.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to skip alcohol entirely before riding. Keep to paved roads — rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks, beaches and off-road riding, and going off the tarmac typically voids your cover.

Bicycle rentals typically come with basic cover for third-party damage, but theft and damage terms vary from one provider to another. Some include simple loss or damage protection in the price, while others cover it through your deposit; always check the exact terms on the booking page before you confirm.
When you make a reservation of a bicycle you also can order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, GPS navigation, clip pedals, side cases, rear rack, basket, light, gloves, speedometer, individual guide or tour, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to the address of your choice.
