Mataró rewards anyone willing to cover it by pedal rather than on foot. In half an hour you can roll from the old town down to the sand at Platja del Varador, follow the seafront along the Passeig Marítim de Mataró, and keep going until the town thins out into the small coves of the Maresme coast. It's the kind of place where a bike turns a short visit into a real morning out — past the marina, along the water, with the option to just keep riding.
What makes Mataró so easy on two wheels is its shape: a compact, mostly flat old town wrapped by a long, uninterrupted seafront and a coastal path that runs in both directions out of town. You don't need a road bike or serious legs — a city or hybrid bike is plenty for reaching the beach, looping past the marina, or heading inland to Argentona, all without hunting for parking or waiting on buses.
Good news here: no licence is required to hire a bicycle, at any age. There's generally no minimum age either, though rental shops may set their own rules for children's or electric models. Deposits are usually modest compared with motorised vehicles, and since no driving licence is involved, there's no need for an International Driving Permit.
Prices in EUR are seasonal and easy to plan around.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months on this stretch of coast, so it pays to book a little ahead if you're travelling then. November through February is the quietest and cheapest stretch, while May–June and September–October hit a comfortable middle ground — mild weather, thinner crowds, and prices closer to the low-season end.
Spain drives on the right, and that applies to bicycles too. A helmet isn't compulsory for adults riding within town, but it is required on interurban roads regardless of age, and always for riders under 16. Cars overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of space, and you're allowed to ride two abreast. Speed limits around town top out at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h or 20 km/h on narrower urban streets, so traffic tends to move slowly and predictably around cyclists. The usual road-sense rules apply too — no riding under the influence, and no headphones covering both ears while on the move.
