Lefkada Town has a rare trick up its sleeve: it's connected to the mainland by a floating causeway, yet the moment you cross it, you're on an island of turquoise coves and mountain villages that most visitors only see through a coach window. Pedal out past the causeway and Agia Mavra Fort, and within minutes you're on quiet lanes heading toward Agios Nikitas, a whitewashed fishing village that makes the perfect coffee stop before continuing on to Kathisma Beach. It's the kind of island where a bicycle turns a checklist of beaches into an actual day out.
The town centre and coastal villages here are flat and compact enough to cover comfortably by pedal power, which is exactly why so many travellers choose to rent a bike in Lefkada Town rather than deal with parking a car. Distances between the main draws — Agios Nikitas, Nydri, the causeway into town — are short and manageable on two wheels, and an e-bike flattens out anything that isn't. The one thing to keep in mind: the steep drops down to west-coast showstoppers like Porto Katsiki are better left to a scooter or car, so plan those as day trips rather than bike rides.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle here, which makes it one of the simplest ways to explore the island. There's no minimum age set by law, though rental shops may ask for a small deposit to cover the vehicle. If you're planning to combine your trip with a scooter or car rental later on, keep in mind Greek rules are stricter: mopeds up to 50 cc need at least an AM licence, and larger scooters need the matching motorcycle category, with an International Driving Permit required for non-EU visitors.
A basic city or beach bike runs around 3-5 EUR per day in low season, rising to 7-10 EUR per day in high season. If you'd rather cover ground without breaking a sweat on the hillier stretches, electric bikes are available from around 15-25 EUR per day.
High season runs July-August, when prices climb and popular models get booked out early, so reserve a few days ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best value and quietest roads found in the shoulder months of May-June and September-October — also the most comfortable weather for a full day of riding.
Greece drives on the right, and while helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, it's worth wearing one on the busier coastal roads regardless. If you upgrade to a scooter or motorcycle during your stay, helmets become compulsory for rider and passenger, with strict enforcement and real fines. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, dropping to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and novice drivers. Island roads can be narrow and gravel-strewn in places, so ride at your own pace and enjoy the views.
