Kythira rewards patience. It's a slow, wind-swept island where the good stuff — a stalactite cave, a rusting shipwreck, a red-sand beach — sits at the end of a narrow road you'd never find on foot. Ride out from the Venetian lanes of Chora down to Kapsali, or push further to the cliff-backed cove at Kaladi, and the island opens up in a way the bus timetable simply won't allow.
That's really the case for two wheels here. Kythira is small, quiet and light on traffic, but its villages, beaches and ruins are scattered across hilly terrain with only a skeleton bus service linking them. A scooter turns a day of waiting and walking into an afternoon of covering ground — ducking onto the rough coastal track to Chalkos, looping inland to the ruins at Paleochora, or simply chasing the light along a cliff road that a car would find too tight. If you want to rent a scooter in Kythira, this is exactly the kind of island it was built for.
For a 50cc moped, category AM is enough and the minimum age is usually 16, though rental shops on the island often prefer riders to be 18 or older. Step up to a 125cc or larger scooter and you'll need a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you in Greece. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit as well, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
Prices swing a lot with the season:
July and August are Kythira's busiest and priciest months, and scooters can sell out on a small island with limited stock, so book ahead if you're travelling then. May, June, September and October are the sweet spot — mild weather, thinner crowds and calmer prices. Outside of that, from November to March, several outfits scale back or close for the season, so confirm availability before you arrive if you're chasing the cheapest rates.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do check. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in villages and 90 km/h on the open road, though Kythira's narrow, occasionally gravel-strewn lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to treat it as zero. Keep to paved roads — rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach riding — and always carry your licence, IDP if applicable, and rental papers with you.
