Kos rewards anyone willing to slow down to bicycle speed. Pedal out from the harbor at Kos Town Castle and within minutes you're weaving through the old town's pedestrian lanes, past the Roman agora and the ancient Hippocrates plane tree, before the road opens onto a coastal path that carries you toward Tigaki's long, shallow sands. Rent a bike here and the island stops being a string of separate stops reached by taxi — it becomes one continuous ride, sea on one side, pine hills on the other.
What makes Kos genuinely suited to two wheels is its shape: barely 25km end to end, flat along almost the entire north coast, and threaded with one of the best-built cycle-lane networks in the Greek islands. A car feels wasted on distances this short, and a scooter can't match the quiet of gliding along the Tigaki-Marmari path with nothing but wind and the odd windsurfer for company. Save the effort for the exceptions: climbing to Zia for sunset, or pushing south toward Therma, where a geared or electric bike earns its keep.
Good news first: no licence is required to hire a bicycle in Greece, whatever your age. Most shops will still ask for some form of ID, and a few take a small deposit — often a credit-card hold rather than cash — to cover the vehicle. There's no IDP requirement either, since bicycles fall outside the driving-licence rules that apply to scooters and motorbikes on the island.
A standard city or beach bike runs roughly 3-6 EUR per day in low season, rising to about 7-12 EUR per day in high season. If you want a geared mountain bike or an e-bike for the climb to Zia, expect somewhere between 12 and 25 EUR per day depending on the season and the shop.
If your trip falls in July or August, book ahead: this is high season, prices sit at their yearly peak, and popular bikes can sell out at the better-located shops. Travelling between November and March gets you the cheapest rates of the year, though your choice of open shops narrows. For the easiest riding conditions and reasonable prices together, aim for May-June or September-October.
Greece drives on the right, and cyclists share that same side of the road. There's no confirmed legal requirement for cyclists to wear a helmet, though wearing one is sensible on shared coastal paths and busier junctions in town. Speed limits for motor traffic sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and up to 90 km/h on open roads, figures worth knowing since you'll be sharing some of those roads with cars and scooters between the marked cycle lanes. The same applies to alcohol limits on the island's roads: Greece sets a general limit of 0.5 g/l for drivers, tightened to 0.2 g/l for novice and professional drivers — a good reason to save the local wine for after you've parked the bike for the day.
