Ikaria doesn't feel like the rest of Greece, and that's the point. The island runs on its own clock, and the best way to catch its rhythm is on two wheels, weaving along the coast road from the port town of Agios Kirykos up toward the hot springs of Therma, then on to the river mouth and ancient ruins at Nas Beach. A scooter turns a scattered handful of villages into a single afternoon, and lets you stop wherever the view demands it.
The island is built around one long perimeter road, climbing through pine forest and dropping back to the sea, and outside Agios Kirykos and Evdilos there's barely any traffic to speak of. That makes Ikaria ideal terrain for a scooter or bike: no bus timetables to plan around, no waiting for a taxi that may never come, just you, the switchbacks, and whichever beach catches your eye. The mountain stretches ask for a bit of riding confidence, but the reward is a kind of freedom that buses simply can't offer here. If you want to rent a scooter in Ikaria, this is exactly the island it was made for.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence; anything 125cc and above calls for the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you here. The minimum age is 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though many rental companies set their own higher minimum. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit on pickup, usually held on a credit card.
Prices swing a fair amount across the year:
July and August are Ikaria's high season, when prices peak and the best scooters get booked out early — worth reserving well ahead if you're travelling then. April, May and October sit at the other end, with lower prices and quieter roads, while many island rental shops close entirely over winter. Book a few weeks out for summer travel; for the shoulder months, a few days' notice is usually enough.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and it's strictly enforced. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Ikaria's winding sections rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance won't cover you on dirt tracks or beaches.
