Chania's old town is made for two wheels. Cobbled lanes fan out from the Venetian Harbour, past the lighthouse and the old Firka fortress, while a short ride west drops you straight onto Nea Chora beach for a swim before lunch. Pedal east along the water and the pace barely changes — cafes, fishing boats, the smell of salt air the whole way to Koum Kapi.
The historic centre is compact, mostly flat and largely closed to cars, so a bicycle covers it faster than walking and without the parking headaches of a scooter. Beyond the walls, quiet paved roads run out onto the Akrotiri peninsula, putting the monastery and a string of sandy coves within easy reach — no rental car required.
Good news — no licence is required to hire a regular bicycle in Greece, so anyone can head straight out on two wheels. Rental shops generally ask for a valid ID and a card for the deposit; there's no minimum age set by law, though individual operators may set their own. If you're planning to switch to a scooter or motorcycle instead, that's a different story: mopeds up to 50cc need at least an AM category licence, larger scooters need the matching motorcycle category, and non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit.
Expect to pay around EUR 3-6 per day in low season, rising to EUR 8-15 per day in high season. E-bikes and newer multi-gear hybrids run higher, typically EUR 15-25 per day.
July and August are Chania's high season — expect the highest prices and the best bikes going first, so book a few days ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is low season, with the cheapest daily rates but many shops scaling back or closing for winter. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot: mild weather, open shops and reasonable prices, and generally no need to book far in advance.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets aren't a legal requirement for cyclists, but riding a scooter, motorcycle or quad without one is against the law and strictly enforced. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, rising to 90 km/h on open roads outside the city, so cycling routes stay well within safe, relaxed territory. Alcohol limits apply mainly to motorised vehicles — 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and novice drivers — so if you're combining a bike ride with an evening at a harbourside taverna, it's a good rule of thumb to keep in mind regardless of what you're riding.
