Avilés rewards anyone willing to cover ground slowly. Pedal out from the arcaded streets of the old town along Calle Galiana and within minutes you're gliding beside the ría toward the white curves of the Centro Niemeyer, one of the most photographed buildings in Asturias. Keep going and the dedicated coastal path carries you all the way to the sand at Playa de Salinas, with the quieter Playa de San Juan waiting just off the same route — the kind of afternoon that's hard to script from a bus timetable.
What makes Avilés so rewarding on two wheels is its shape: a compact old town ringed by a flat estuary and a proper cycle path running straight to the coast. The narrow historic streets and scarce parking that frustrate drivers simply don't apply to a bike, and the short, mostly level distances to the beaches, San Balandrán's viewpoints and even the more ambitious ride out to Cabo Peñas mean you can string together a full day of sights without ever needing a car.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Spain, whatever your age. Most rental points ask riders to be at least 16, though children can usually join on a smaller model with a guardian. A deposit, often blocked on a credit card, is standard practice, and since no driving licence is involved, an International Driving Permit is never needed for a bicycle rental — that only applies if you later decide to add a scooter or moped to your trip.
Prices in Avilés move noticeably with the season. Our own listings start from as little as 3 EUR per day in low season, and a typical range across the market looks like this:
July and August are the busiest and priciest months on the Asturian coast, so if you're planning a summer trip it's worth reserving your bike rental in Avilés a few weeks ahead. November to February is low season, with the cheapest rates and no need to book far in advance. If you'd rather skip both extremes, May–June and September–October give you mild weather and easier availability — a comfortable middle ground for anyone looking to rent a bike in Avilés without summer crowds or winter chill.
Spain drives on the right, and cyclists share that same rule of the road. A helmet is compulsory on interurban roads for riders of any age, though within the city it's only required for cyclists under 16 — many visitors choose to wear one everywhere regardless. Drivers overtaking a cyclist must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance, and you're allowed to ride two abreast. Urban speed limits run from 50 km/h down to 20 km/h on shared-level streets, so traffic moves slowly enough to make riding alongside it comfortable. The blood alcohol limit for anyone on the road is 0.5 g/l, lower for newer drivers, so it's best enjoyed with a clear head — all the more reason to save the cider for after you've returned the bike.
