Astypalaia looks like a butterfly resting on the Aegean, and once you're standing below the white cube houses of Chora with the ruined Querini castle overhead, you'll understand why so few visitors ever leave. A **scooter rental in Astypalaia** turns that first view into a whole week of exploring — down to Livadi Beach for lunch under the trees, out along the coast to the mosaic ruins at Analipsi, or further still to the isolated bays of Vathy, where the road narrows and the scenery does most of the talking.
This is a small island with a simple, looping road network, so a scooter is really the only sensible way to see it properly. Buses barely reach the outer villages, distances between Chora, the port and the beaches are short, and parking a car in the narrow lanes of Chora is more trouble than it's worth. Some of the best spots — Kaminakia, Vatses, the far arm out to Vathy — sit at the end of winding, partly unpaved roads that suit two wheels far better than four, and **renting a scooter in Astypalaia** costs a fraction of a car hire besides.
For mopeds up to 50 cc you need at least an AM category licence, and the minimum age is usually 16, though most rental shops set it higher. Larger scooters from 125 cc up call for a matching motorcycle licence category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and you'll need to leave a deposit, typically held on a credit card, which varies by operator and by vehicle.
A basic scooter runs from around 3 to 8 EUR a day in the quiet months, climbing to roughly 15 to 25 EUR during peak weeks. Larger-cc scooters and quad bikes sit higher, around 25 to 40 EUR a day.
High season runs July through August, when scooters sell out fast and prices sit at their highest — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with many shops closed altogether. The sweet spot is May, June, September or October: pleasant riding weather, thinner crowds and noticeably lower prices.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police do enforce this on the islands. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Astypalaia's narrow, winding lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep to paved roads where you can — rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches — and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you as you ride.
