Amorgos rewards anyone willing to move slowly. The island's easternmost outpost in the Cyclades is all steep hillsides and quiet coves, and a bicycle lets you feel every metre of that landscape instead of rushing past it. Pedal out of Katapola along the harbour, past tavernas setting up for the evening, and you'll understand why so many travellers choose to rent a bicycle in Amorgos rather than stay tied to a bus timetable. Ride up toward Chora and the coastal light changes with every bend — this is an island best explored at handlebar height.
What makes Amorgos particularly suited to two wheels is its shape: two separate clusters of villages, each compact enough to cover by bike in an afternoon. The hop from Katapola up to Chora, or from Aegiali across to Tholaria, covers just a few kilometres with hardly any traffic to contend with. The catch is the middle — the mountainous spine linking the island's two halves is steep enough that most riders pair their bicycle hire in Amorgos with an occasional bus or car for the longer crossings, saving the bike for what it does best: short, scenic, unhurried rides between port and village.
Good news here: no licence is required to hire a bicycle anywhere in Greece, and there's no minimum age set by law. Most rental shops will still ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, and may want to see some form of ID. There's no need for an International Driving Permit either — that only applies to motorised vehicles.
Prices move noticeably with the season, so it pays to know roughly what to expect before you book.
July and August are Amorgos's busiest and priciest months, and the midday heat can make cycling the steeper stretches genuinely hard going. Many riders find May–June and September–October a better match for a bicycle, with cooler temperatures and softer light for the climb up to Chora. If you're travelling outside the winter closure, booking a day or two ahead is usually enough, though in high season it's worth reserving earlier since good bikes get snapped up fast.
Greece drives on the right, and while cyclists face far fewer rules than scooter or car riders, a few things are worth keeping in mind. Roads on Amorgos are often narrow and can be poorly lit after dark, so daytime riding is far more pleasant and safer. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, but they're a sensible precaution on the steeper descents. If you're combining your trip with a scooter or car at any point, remember that speed limits are 50 km/h in villages and up to 90 km/h on open roads, and the blood-alcohol limit is a strict 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for novice and professional drivers.
