Agrinio doesn't announce itself the way Athens or Nafplio do, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. Pedal out from the centre and within minutes you're tracing the shoreline of Lake Trichonida, Greece's largest natural lake, past reed beds and small fishing villages with barely a car in sight. Climb the other direction and you're inside the Agios Christoforos Forest, a pine-covered hillside closed to motor traffic, where the paths were practically built for a bike.
This is a city built at bicycle scale. The centre, the lake, the forest and a handful of lakeside villages all sit within an easy ride of each other, so a bike gets you further than walking and costs far less than a taxi or a hire car. Traffic stays light once you're off the main market streets, and the best parts of Agrinio — the lakeshore, the forest tracks, the hill villages — are places a car simply can't take you. If you want to rent a bike in Agrinio, this is a city that rewards it.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle in Greece, and there's no minimum age set by law, though rental companies may ask for ID. A deposit is usually requested, typically as a card hold, with the amount varying by operator and bike. An IDP isn't relevant here — that only applies if you're hiring something motorised.
Expect EUR 3–5 per day in low season, rising to EUR 8–12 in high season, with e-bikes or higher-spec road and mountain bikes running EUR 12–18 per day.
July and August are high season, when demand and prices both peak and the midday heat makes long rides harder work. Low season runs November to March, with the cheapest rates but cooler, wetter weather. For the best balance of comfortable riding and fair prices, aim for spring or autumn, when the lake and forest routes are quiet and the temperatures are kind to a full day in the saddle.
Greece drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. There's no legal helmet requirement for cycling, though wearing one is sensible on shared roads. Speed limits for motor traffic are 50 km/h in built-up areas and higher on the open road, so stay alert on the stretches where you're sharing tarmac with cars. If you're combining a bike ride with a car or scooter elsewhere on your trip, remember the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers. On the lakeside and forest paths, though, you'll mostly have the road to yourself.
