Agios Nikolaos rewards anyone willing to cover ground on two wheels. Pedal down to Lake Voulismeni in the morning while the cafés around it are still quiet, then follow the harbour road out to Kitroplatia Beach for a swim before lunch. The town is small enough to cross in minutes, yet a bike opens up everything just beyond it — the salt pans and sea views on the road to Elounda, or the hill village of Kritsa with its frescoed chapel and Doric ruins above. This is a place built for slow discovery, and a bike lets you set the pace.
Agios Nikolaos is compact but hilly, and that combination suits a bicycle better than a car. Downtown, parking is a headache and most of what matters — the lake, the harbour, the town beaches — sits within a five to fifteen minute ride. Further out, the coast road to Elounda and Almyros is flat and scenic, easy mileage that would be a long walk but a pleasant cycle, while the climb inland to Kritsa and Ancient Lato rewards the effort with some of the best views over the Gulf of Mirabello. If you want to rent a bike in Agios Nikolaos, you get the flexibility to string these together into one loop or spread them across a few easy days.
None of this requires a licence — ordinary bicycles don't need one in Greece, and there's no minimum age or IDP to worry about. Most shops will still ask for a small deposit, usually held on a credit card, to cover the bike while it's out with you. Bring ID and you're ready to go.
A basic city or beach bike starts at around 3 EUR per day in low season, climbing to roughly 7-12 EUR per day in the summer crowds. E-bikes and proper mountain bikes cost more, typically 15-25 EUR per day, which is worth it for the Kritsa climb if you'd rather save your legs for the view.
July and August are peak season on Crete — hot, busy, and the months when rental prices and demand both hit their highest point, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with many local shops closed and better rates from whoever stays open. For the best balance, aim for May, June, September or October: comfortable riding weather, fewer tourists, and prices well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right, and while cyclists aren't bound by the same rules as motorised riders, it's worth knowing the wider picture if you're combining a bike trip with a scooter one day. Helmets are compulsory for anyone on a moped, scooter or motorcycle, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightening to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers — good reason to save the local wine for after you've parked for the day.

Bicycle rentals typically come with basic cover for third-party damage, but theft and damage terms vary from one provider to another. Some include simple loss or damage protection in the price, while others cover it through your deposit; always check the exact terms on the booking page before you confirm.
When you make a reservation of a bicycle you also can order the following extra services and equipment: helmet, GPS navigation, clip pedals, side cases, rear rack, basket, light, gloves, speedometer, individual guide or tour, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to the address of your choice.
