Fuengirola rewards anyone willing to cover a bit of ground, and a bicycle is the easiest way to do it. Freewheel down the Paseo Marítimo Rey de España at sunrise, stop wherever the water looks good, and keep going until the Castillo Sohail rises at the mouth of the river. There is no schedule to catch, no parking to hunt for — just seven kilometres of promenade and whatever you decide to do with them.
What makes this town so well suited to two wheels is its shape: flat, coastal, and stitched together by a paved path that runs almost car-free from one end to the other. A bicycle in Fuengirola turns a string of separate beaches into a single, connected afternoon, and the same path continues east into the Senda Litoral, opening up a longer ride toward Benalmádena that most visitors on foot never attempt. If your legs are up for a climb, the hills inland toward Mijas are there too — entirely optional, and entirely worth it for the view.
Good news here: no licence is required to ride a bicycle in Spain, at any age. Rental companies typically ask riders to be at least 16 or 18 depending on the bike, and a deposit is usually blocked on a credit card in your name — no ID permit needed, just a card and a bit of time to sign the paperwork.
Prices move with the season. Expect around 5–8 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 12–18 EUR per day in high season, and 20–25 EUR per day if you go for an electric or premium road bike.
July and August are peak season on the Costa del Sol, alongside Easter week, so book ahead if you're travelling then. From November through March things quiet down considerably, and prices drop with them. For the best mix of good weather and lighter crowds — and fair prices — aim for May, June, September or October.
Spain drives on the right. Cyclists must wear a helmet on interurban roads at any age, though within town it's only compulsory for riders under 16. Speed limits in built-up areas top out at 50 km/h, dropping to 30 km/h or even 20 km/h on narrower shared streets, so traffic moves slowly and predictably around cyclists. Vehicles overtaking a bike must leave at least 1.5 metres of clearance, and if you're out after dark outside town, lights and a reflective garment are required. The blood alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, so keep that in mind if you're combining a ride with an evening out.
