Coastal traffic here rarely rises above a gentle hum, and that's exactly what makes Mui Ne one of the best places in Vietnam to put yourself behind the handlebars. Rent a scooter in Mui Ne and the whole stretch opens up — the wind-sculpted White Sand Dunes at sunrise, the red-clay walls of the Fairy Stream, the round basket boats bobbing at the fishing harbour before the morning auction. None of it is far, but none of it is really walkable either, and a taxi will never let you linger exactly where the light is good.
What makes this coast so scooter-friendly is its shape: everything worth seeing sits along one flat, wide road that hugs the shoreline for twenty-odd kilometres, with a few inland detours to a mountain pagoda and an old lighthouse. There's none of the chaos of Ho Chi Minh City's traffic — just open tarmac, sea air, and dunes that change colour by the hour. A scooter rental in Mui Ne means you set your own schedule, which matters most at sunrise over the dunes, a moment no fixed-departure tour can promise you.
For any scooter under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18, even though local rules allow younger riders on these smaller machines. If you go for anything larger, you'll need a motorcycle licence, and as a foreigner that means either a Vietnamese licence or a valid international driving permit in the 1968 format, endorsed for motorcycles — note that the 1949-convention IDP issued in the US and a few other countries won't be accepted here. Expect to leave a cash deposit, or sometimes your passport, as security; the exact amount depends on the shop and the bike.
A standard manual or semi-automatic scooter runs around 120,000–140,000 VND per day in low season, climbing to roughly 150,000–220,000 VND during busier periods. Newer automatic models, such as a Honda Air Blade, Vario or SH-class bike, typically cost 180,000–280,000 VND per day.
High season runs November through April, when dry, sunny days make the dunes and coastal road especially rewarding — book a few days ahead if you're arriving around Tet, since bikes get scarce and some shops close entirely. Low season falls in the rainier stretch from May to September, when prices ease off but afternoon downpours are more common. If your priority is the best light for photos at the dunes with the smallest crowds, aim for the shoulder months of October or November.
Vietnam drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter — police checkpoints enforce this routinely, with on-the-spot fines. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, checked via roadside breath tests, especially at night and around holidays. Speed limits are lower inside built-up areas than on the open coastal road, so follow the signposted numbers rather than assuming a flat national limit. Headlights are required after dark, and remember there's no right turn on red here unless a sign or green arrow specifically allows it.
