Inland from the resort strips of the south, Santa Lucía de Tirajana opens onto some of Gran Canaria's wildest terrain, and a quad bike is the way to actually get into it. Climb out of town toward the palm-lined gorge of Fataga, then keep going until the road narrows and the coast disappears behind you, replaced by pine ridges circling the turquoise water of the Presa de Chira. This is not a drive you do in a rental car and forget about — it's the kind of afternoon that stays with you.
Santa Lucía sits right where the paved south coast ends and the island's mountainous interior begins, and that border is exactly what makes it ideal for this vehicle. Roads here turn to unsurfaced tracks fast, switchbacking steeply toward reservoirs and viewpoints that a standard scooter or hire car can't comfortably handle. A **quad rental in Santa Lucía** gives you the grip and clearance to follow those tracks all the way up, turning a route that would otherwise eat a full day of driving into a proper adventure.
Road-legal quads require a driving licence, and rental companies here generally want to see a car (category B) licence rather than a moped or motorcycle one. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it, since desks routinely ask for both. Most operators set their own minimum age, commonly 18 or 21 depending on the model, and take a deposit blocked on a credit card in your name, with the amount varying by vehicle and company.
Expect to pay 15-25 EUR per day in low season, rising to 30-45 EUR in high season, with premium models running 50-70 EUR per day.
Unlike mainland Spain, the Canary Islands run rentals year-round, and the northern-hemisphere winter is actually their busy season. Book ahead for July-August and the Christmas/New Year stretch, when both prices and demand peak; January to March and November are quieter and cheaper, with plenty of availability if you'd rather book closer to your trip.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers at all times, and headlights must stay on, day and night. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads outside towns, dropping to 50 km/h in built-up areas and lower still on narrow urban streets — useful to know on Santa Lucía's winding mountain roads. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for drivers with less than two years' experience.
