Picture leaving the promenade at Platja del Varador behind and, half an hour later, standing on a forest ridge with the whole Maresme coast spread out below you. That is the shortcut a quad gives you in Mataró: no long drive, no shuttle bus, just a straight line from sand to summit. Along the way you can swing past Torre Llauder and the old town before the streets give way to dirt tracks climbing toward Argentona and the hills beyond.
Mataró sits right at the seam between flat coastline and the steep, wooded slopes of the Montnegre-Corredor and Serralada Litoral ranges — terrain that's slow going on foot and simply closed to ordinary cars. A quad turns that seam into a playground: it handles the loose tracks, the switchbacks and the climbs that a scooter or bike would struggle with, so you can string together beach, old town and forest ridge in a single afternoon.
Road-legal quads require a driving licence, and rental companies usually ask to see a standard car licence rather than anything more specialised. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 18 or sometimes 21, on top of the legal requirement. If your licence isn't from the EU, it's worth carrying an International Driving Permit alongside it, since desks commonly ask for one. A deposit is standard practice too, usually blocked on a credit card in your name, with the exact amount depending on the model and the company.
Expect to pay 15–25 EUR per day in low season and 35–55 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 60–90 EUR per day.
High season runs through July and August, when demand and prices both peak along the Maresme coast. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest trails and the lowest rates. If you want good weather without the summer crowds or prices, May–June and September–October hit the sweet spot for exploring Montnegre-Corredor by quad.
Spain drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider on a quad, no exceptions. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads outside town and drop to 50 km/h — often 30 km/h or lower — once you're back in Mataró's streets. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightened to 0.3 g/l for anyone who has held a licence for under two years, so it's best to save the drinks for after you've parked.
