Picture swapping the resort shuttle for your own set of wheels: a quad bike carries you straight from the sand of the Dunas de Maspalomas into the volcanic hills above, past the palm-lined Fataga gorge and up toward the lookout points where the whole island opens out below you. Gran Canaria packs beach, desert and mountain into one short ride, and a quad is the easiest way to string them together in a single afternoon.
This is exactly why a quad suits the island so well. The south coast's paved resort roads give way fast to rougher inland tracks through the barrancos, and a quad handles both without missing a beat. Because the island is so compact — under an hour from the south-coast resorts to the central peaks — you can start the day on the beach and finish it watching the sun drop from a mountain viewpoint, something a rental car or a walking tour simply can't match.
Rental companies normally ask for a car driving licence, since a road-legal quad is generally treated the same way behind the wheel. Most set their own minimum age, typically 18 or 21 depending on the model. If your licence isn't from the EU or EEA, bring an International Driving Permit along with your home licence — most desks will ask to see it. A deposit is usually required too, normally blocked on a credit card in your name, with the amount depending on the vehicle and operator.
Expect to pay 15-25 EUR per day in low season and 30-45 EUR per day in high season, with premium two-seat or larger-engine models running 50-70 EUR per day.
Unlike mainland Spain, the Canary Islands run rentals year-round, and it's the northern winter that brings the crowds and the higher prices. If you're after the best rates, aim for May-June or September-October. Travelling in December-March, book ahead — quads get snapped up fast during peak winter-sun season.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, no exceptions, on any road at any time. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads and drop to 50 km/h in towns, down to 30 km/h on single-lane urban streets — worth remembering on Gran Canaria's winding mountain sections. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, so it's best to save the wine for after you've parked. If you want to rent a quad bike in Gran Canaria, just use the search form at the top of the page. Have a nice trip!
