Figueres doesn't feel like a coastal town, and that's exactly the point. Tucked inland in the Alt Empordà, it's the kind of base where a quad bike turns the surrounding countryside into your own private map — one afternoon you're climbing toward the medieval bridge at Besalú, the next you're bouncing along the wind-scoured tracks of Cap de Creus with the Mediterranean opening up ahead. This is the region Dalí called home, and riding through it on two wheels or four gives you the same restless, wide-open feeling his paintings do.
Because Figueres sits well back from the coast, the best of this region — the volcanic hill villages, the wetlands, the cliffside viewpoints — are all a 15 to 40 km ride away rather than a walk. A rental car handles the distance but can't follow you onto a dirt track; a bicycle makes the distance a slog. A quad splits the difference: it eats up the open country roads with ease and still has the ground clearance to handle the unpaved switchbacks around Cap de Creus and the hinterland villages, where a normal car simply has to turn back.
Road-legal quads require a driving licence, and rental companies will normally ask to see a standard car licence rather than anything specialised. Most operators set their own minimum age, typically 18 or 21 depending on the model, and some ask that you've held your licence for a minimum period. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit along with it — many rental desks ask for one. Expect a deposit as well, usually blocked on a credit card in the renter's name, with the amount depending on the vehicle you choose.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 15–25 EUR per day, while high season pushes that up to around 35–60 EUR per day. Larger or two-seat, buggy-style quads run higher still, from about 60 to 120 EUR per day at peak times.
July and August are Spain's high season, alongside Easter week, and Figueres is no exception — book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season on the mainland, with lower prices and far less competition for the good models. If you want the sweet spot, aim for May–June or September–October: quieter roads, milder weather, and prices that haven't hit the summer peak.
Spain drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on mopeds and motorcycles at all times, and quad riders should plan to wear one too. Speed limits top out at 90 km/h on conventional roads outside town and drop to 50 km/h in built-up areas, with some urban streets limited to 30 or even 20 km/h. The blood alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and mobile phone use while riding is banned. Beyond that, just enjoy the ride — if you're ready to explore the Alt Empordà on your own schedule, use the search form at the top of the page and book your quad bike in Figueres. Have a nice trip!
