Florina doesn't look like a cycling destination at first glance — it's a quiet mountain town near the Albanian and North Macedonian borders, more famous for its peppers than its scenery. But get a bike under you and the whole basin opens up: flat lakeside roads around the Prespa Lakes, a wooden footbridge out to a Byzantine ruin, and stone villages climbing into the Vernon range. If you want to actually reach these places rather than just read about them, you'll want to rent a bike in Florina and go looking.
This is bike country almost by default. Florina's old town, strung along the Sakouleva river, is compact and flat enough to cover on two wheels in an hour. The real reason to cycle here, though, is the Prespa basin: the lakeside villages sit only a short ride apart, but buses between them are scarce and awkward to time, while a car will just carry you past the wetlands and viewpoints you actually came to see. A bike lets you stop wherever a pelican colony or a hill view catches your eye, and it's the only practical way to reach the Vernon and Varnous foothills on your own schedule.
None of this requires a licence — cycling is open to anyone, no permit and no IDP needed. Most rental shops set their own minimum age, typically around 12-14 for solo riders, and younger children usually ride with an adult or in a child seat. A deposit is standard practice, either a credit-card hold or a cash amount, and the amount depends on the operator and the bike — expect a higher hold on e-bikes and mountain bikes than on a basic city bike.
Prices are modest compared with the islands. A basic city or hybrid bike runs around 3 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 7-12 EUR per day in high season. E-bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes, better suited to the Vernon climbs, typically cost 15-25 EUR per day.
July and August are Florina's busiest and most expensive months, so booking a couple of weeks ahead is a good idea if you're travelling then. For lower prices and quieter roads, May-June and September-October are the sweet spot — mild weather, green lake scenery, and no need to book far in advance. Winter brings snow to the surrounding mountains, so confirm with the operator that they're open before planning a visit between November and March.
Greece drives on the right, and cyclists share the road under the same general rules as other vehicles, keeping to the right-hand side. Helmets aren't legally required for cyclists, though wearing one on the mountain descents around Vigla-Pisoderi is simply good sense. In built-up areas the general speed limit for vehicles is 50 km/h, so drivers around you should be moving slowly through town; on the open lakeside roads, take care regardless, as some stretches carry faster traffic. Greece sets a blood-alcohol limit of 0.5 g/l for most road users, so keep the same rule of thumb in mind if you're combining a ride with a taverna stop.
