If someday you will be in Vung Tau, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a scooter in Vung Tau on our website and explore this seaside city at your own pace. Vung Tau sits on a small peninsula about 95 km south-east of Ho Chi Minh City, and a scooter is by far the easiest way to follow its breezy coastal roads, slip between the two mountains and stop wherever the view is good. A scooter is eco-friendly, cheap to run, and you will see far more than you would from a taxi window. On this page you will find a full guide to scooter rental in Vung Tau.
The city is especially suited to a moped: distances are short, parking is never a problem, and the seafront promenade almost asks to be ridden slowly with the sea on one side. On a scooter you can chase the sunset along Front Beach, climb to the giant statue on the headland, or ride out of town towards the quieter beaches further along the coast.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for a small 50cc scooter a basic licence is usually enough, while for larger machines an A-class motorcycle licence is expected. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the scooter in good condition.
Scooter rental in Vung Tau starts from around 130,000 VND per day for a small automatic and runs up to roughly 320,000–400,000 VND per day for a larger or newer model. What you pay depends on the size of the scooter and, importantly, on the time of year. Prices follow a clear seasonal pattern:
Within any season, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the real peak — that is when the cheapest scooters sell out first and prices edge up. Book a few days ahead to lock in the best rate.
The dry season, from November to April, is the most pleasant time to ride and the busiest. The rainy season runs from May to October, when the roads are quieter and rates fall, but expect short heavy showers. If you want the best weather, aim for the dry months; if you want the best price, the rainy season is kinder to your wallet. Either way, book a few days in advance to guarantee availability, especially over weekends and holidays.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on open roads. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Traffic in Vietnam flows in its own rhythm: stay calm, move predictably, use your horn lightly to signal your presence rather than in anger, and give way to bigger vehicles. Ride defensively, keep your lights on, and take the busiest junctions gently until you feel comfortable.
