If someday you will be in Haiphong, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a scooter in Haiphong on our website and explore this historic northern port city at your own pace. Haiphong blends French colonial boulevards, a working harbour and a fast-modernising skyline, with the ferry piers to Cat Ba Island and the beach town of Do Son both within easy reach — a scooter lets you move between all of it without waiting on buses or taxis.
The city suits a scooter well: the French Quarter has wide, tree-lined avenues that are a pleasure to ride, the port and old town are close together, and traffic, while busy, moves at a manageable city pace. On a scooter you can admire the colonial-era Opera House at your own speed, wander the old streets around Du Hang Pagoda, or head out to Do Son for an afternoon by the sea.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for a 125cc machine an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger scooters call for a full A-class motorcycle licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the scooter in good condition.
Scooter rental in Haiphong starts from around 130,000 VND per day and runs up to about 340,000 VND per day for a larger, newer automatic model. As a business and port city rather than a beach resort, prices in Haiphong move less dramatically with the seasons than in coastal tourist towns, but there is still a clear pattern:
In short, the shoulder months of spring and autumn tend to be priciest thanks to comfortable weather, while the cool winter months offer the best value if you don’t mind packing a jacket. Booking a few days ahead is worthwhile around Tet and major national holidays, when both the city and nearby Do Son see a surge in visitors.
Haiphong shares Northern Vietnam’s four-season climate. From November to March the weather turns genuinely cold and often damp or foggy, especially in December and January, so pack warm layers even though you are on the coast. March to May and September to October are the most pleasant months, with mild temperatures and good conditions for riding and sightseeing. June to August is hot and humid, with the summer being peak season for the nearby beaches of Do Son and Cat Ba, plus a higher chance of tropical storms affecting the coast. If you want comfortable riding weather, aim for spring or autumn; if you want to save money and don’t mind the chill, winter is the cheapest time to visit.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on the open highway. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Haiphong is a busy working port city with a fair amount of truck and container traffic near the docks, so keep extra distance around heavy vehicles, use your horn lightly to signal your presence rather than in anger, and take care crossing the wider junctions in the city centre.
