Tuy Hoa doesn't hand you its best views from a bus window. The city sits quietly on Vietnam's central coast, and its real draws — the hexagonal basalt columns of Ganh Da Dia, the wooden sprawl of Ong Cop Bridge, the sand dunes below Mui Dien Lighthouse — are scattered along back roads that no city bus bothers with. Rent a scooter in Tuy Hoa and you can chase the early light out to the reef before the tour groups arrive, then swing south along the coast to Vung Ro Bay for grilled seafood with your feet still sandy.
This is flat, easy-riding country. Traffic in Tuy Hoa itself is light compared to Hanoi or Saigon, the roads out to the coast are quiet two-lane stretches, and the distances between sights are short enough that you can string together three or four stops in a single morning. Whether you've ridden for years or you're renting your first scooter abroad, a scooter hire in Tuy Hoa is about as forgiving an introduction as Vietnam offers.
For scooters under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Anything larger calls for a motorcycle licence, and foreign visitors need either a Vietnamese licence or a valid international driving permit endorsed for motorcycles. Rental shops usually set their own minimum age, commonly 18, even though under-50cc bikes can legally be ridden younger. Expect to leave a cash deposit or your passport as security; the amount varies by shop and bike.
A basic automatic scooter runs 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season, rising to 150,000–200,000 VND per day in high season. Larger or newer models, including Vespa-style bikes and anything 150cc and up, go for 250,000–350,000 VND per day.
High season runs roughly November to April for international visitors, with a second domestic surge in June to August — book a few days ahead if you're arriving during either window, and well in advance around Tet, when bikes grow scarce and many shops close. Low season falls in the shoulder months of September to December, when rain is more likely but rental scooters are plentiful and prices sit at their lowest.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter or moped, and police do check. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, enforced through roadside breath tests, particularly at night and around holidays. Speed limits are lower inside built-up areas than on the open road, and lower for scooters than for cars, so read the signposted limits as you go rather than assuming a fixed number. Headlights are required after dark, and scooters are barred from expressways and a handful of major bridges and tunnels — watch for the exclusion signs as you plan your route out to the coast.
