Picture waking up in Phan Thiet with nowhere to be and a whole coastline ahead of you. Grab a scooter and by mid-morning you could be sand-sledding down the White Sand Dunes, then wading barefoot through the orange gullies of the Fairy Stream before lunch. This is a place made for riding — long, easy roads stitched between dunes, fishing bays and a lighthouse at the end of the coast, all waiting to be discovered at your own pace.
Phan Thiet's best spots are strung out along a wide coastal strip and a few inland hills, exactly the kind of geography public transport ignores. A scooter lets you link the dunes, the fishing village and the lighthouse into a single day out, something no bus route here even attempts. The roads themselves are flat, well-paved and quiet once you're past downtown traffic, so even riders with little experience find it a relaxed, low-stress way to get around.
For a standard scooter under 50cc — the usual tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Anything above 50cc needs a motorcycle licence, and if you're not Vietnamese that means a Vietnamese licence or a valid International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles under the 1968 convention; note the American, Japanese and a few other IDPs based on the 1949 convention aren't accepted. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18 even for smaller bikes, and you should expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or your passport, with the amount varying by shop and bike.
A standard manual scooter runs about 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season and 180,000–250,000 VND per day in high season. If you'd rather have an automatic, a bigger engine or go electric, expect 250,000–350,000 VND per day.
Vietnam's high season for visitors runs November to April, with Tet — the sharpest spike of all, usually falling in late January or February — bringing scarce bikes, higher prices and closed shops, so book well ahead if you're travelling then. The quieter, cheaper months are roughly April through September, when you'll find better rates and no trouble finding a scooter on short notice.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, no exceptions, and police do check. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for riders, enforced through roadside breath tests, so save the beer for after you've parked. Speed limits are signposted and change by road type and whether you're in a built-up area, so keep an eye on the signs rather than guessing. Scooters are also barred from expressways, so stick to the coastal and local roads — which, luckily, is where all the best views are anyway.
