Picture waking up in Phan Thiet with nowhere to be and a whole coastline ahead of you. Grab a scooter and by mid-morning you could be sand-sledding down the White Sand Dunes, then wading barefoot through the orange gullies of the Fairy Stream before lunch. This is a place made for riding — long, easy roads stitched between dunes, fishing bays and a lighthouse at the end of the coast, all waiting to be discovered at your own pace.

Phan Thiet's best spots are strung out along a wide coastal strip and a few inland hills, exactly the kind of geography public transport ignores. A scooter lets you link the dunes, the fishing village and the lighthouse into a single day out, something no bus route here even attempts. The roads themselves are flat, well-paved and quiet once you're past downtown traffic, so even riders with little experience find it a relaxed, low-stress way to get around.

Top 10 things to see in Phan Thiet by scooter

  1. Mui Ne White Sand Dunes (Bàu Trắng) — rolling white dunes about 25km out, best reached early on a scooter before the tour buses arrive, with sand-sledding on offer.
  2. Red Sand Dunes (Đồi Cát Đỏ / Đồi Hồng) — ochre-red dunes right off the coastal road, closer to town and stunning at sunset.
  3. Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên) — a shallow stream you wade through barefoot between orange-and-white eroded cliffs, an easy ride and short walk from Mui Ne.
  4. Mui Ne Fishing Village — a bay crowded with round basket boats, liveliest at dawn when the fleet comes in with the catch.
  5. Ta Cu Mountain (Núi Tà Cú) — cable car or trail up to a giant reclining Buddha and pagoda, a longer scenic ride south of the city.
  6. Poshanu Cham Towers (Tháp Po Sah Inư) — 8th-century brick towers on a hilltop with sweeping views over Phan Thiet and the coast, just minutes from downtown.
  7. Ke Ga Lighthouse (Hải Đăng Kê Gà) — a century-old lighthouse on an islet along a gorgeous stretch of coast, a favourite half-day loop.
  8. Hon Rom Beach — a quieter beach past Mui Ne with calmer water for swimming, reached along the coastal road.
  9. Phan Thiet Old Town / Duc Thanh School — a riverside quarter of colonial-era shophouses and the historic school where Ho Chi Minh once taught, worth a slow ride through.
  10. Mui Ne coastal road (Nguyen Dinh Chieu / Huynh Thuc Khang) — the scenic strip linking Phan Thiet to Mui Ne, lined with resorts, seafood shacks and viewpoints worth stopping for.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Phan Thiet?

For a standard scooter under 50cc — the usual tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Anything above 50cc needs a motorcycle licence, and if you're not Vietnamese that means a Vietnamese licence or a valid International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles under the 1968 convention; note the American, Japanese and a few other IDPs based on the 1949 convention aren't accepted. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18 even for smaller bikes, and you should expect to leave a deposit, either in cash or your passport, with the amount varying by shop and bike.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Phan Thiet?

A standard manual scooter runs about 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season and 180,000–250,000 VND per day in high season. If you'd rather have an automatic, a bigger engine or go electric, expect 250,000–350,000 VND per day.

  • Prices climb during December–February, driven up by the Christmas and New Year holidays and Tet.
  • Prices are at their lowest from April to September, outside of any local holidays.

When to book a rental scooter in Phan Thiet?

Vietnam's high season for visitors runs November to April, with Tet — the sharpest spike of all, usually falling in late January or February — bringing scarce bikes, higher prices and closed shops, so book well ahead if you're travelling then. The quieter, cheaper months are roughly April through September, when you'll find better rates and no trouble finding a scooter on short notice.

Local traffic rules in Phan Thiet

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, no exceptions, and police do check. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for riders, enforced through roadside breath tests, so save the beer for after you've parked. Speed limits are signposted and change by road type and whether you're in a built-up area, so keep an eye on the signs rather than guessing. Scooters are also barred from expressways, so stick to the coastal and local roads — which, luckily, is where all the best views are anyway.
