If someday you will be in Mui Ne, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a scooter in Mui Ne on our website and explore this laid-back beach and dune town at your own pace. Mui Ne stretches along a single long coastal road backed by the sea on one side and rolling sand dunes on the other, and a scooter is by far the easiest way to cover the distances between the resorts, the fishing village and the dunes further out. It is eco-friendly, cheap to run, and lets you chase the wind and the light across the dunes instead of being tied to a tour bus schedule.
The town suits a scooter perfectly: the coastal road is long, straight and fast, traffic is light compared with the big cities, and the main sights are spread out enough along that single road that a scooter is clearly the most practical choice. On a scooter you can watch the sunrise over the Red Sand Dunes, cool off at the Fairy Stream by mid-morning, and still have time to wander the fishing harbour before lunch.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old, and for a 125cc machine an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger scooters call for a full A-class motorcycle licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence, since strictly speaking a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally — check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the scooter in good condition.
Scooter rental in Mui Ne starts from around 130,000 VND per day for a basic automatic scooter and runs up to about 350,000 VND per day for a larger, newer model. What you pay depends on the engine size you choose and, importantly, on the time of year. Prices in Mui Ne follow a fairly predictable seasonal pattern:
In short, you will pay the most from November to April, when the weather is at its most reliable, and save the most in the low season around the middle of the year. Booking a few days ahead over the winter high season is a sensible habit.
Mui Ne’s dry season runs roughly from November to April, with steady sun, strong winds for kitesurfing and the best conditions for riding the dunes and coastal road — this is also the priciest stretch of the year. The wetter season from May to October brings short afternoon showers and lower prices, with the calmest, greenest landscapes around the dunes. If you want guaranteed sunshine, aim for the winter months; if you want a bargain, the rainy season is kinder to your wallet.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on open roads. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. The main coastal road through Mui Ne carries fast-moving trucks and buses, so ride defensively, keep well to the side, use your horn lightly to signal your presence rather than in anger, and take extra care crossing to reach the dunes, which sit off busier stretches of road.
