If someday you will be in Dong Hoi, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a scooter in Dong Hoi on our website and explore this quiet coastal capital of Quang Binh at your own pace. Dong Hoi sits where the Nhat Le River meets the sea, with a wide sandy beach right on the edge of town and the caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park just a couple of hours inland — a scooter is what turns both into an easy day out rather than a logistics puzzle.
The city itself is compact, flat and easy to ride: broad avenues, light traffic compared with Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and cheap roadside parking almost everywhere. On a scooter you can watch the sunset over the Nhat Le, cross the river to Bao Ninh peninsula for a swim, or set off early for the long, scenic run out to Phong Nha and be back the same evening.
Requirements vary a little between rental companies, but the common rules are these: you should be at least 18 years old; for a 125cc automatic an A1 licence is generally expected, while a larger or manual machine calls for a full A-class motorcycle licence. Foreign visitors are advised to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence, since strictly speaking a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally — check the exact terms of your chosen provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when the scooter comes back in good condition.
Scooter rental in Dong Hoi starts from around 130,000 VND per day for a small automatic and runs up to about 350,000 VND per day for a larger or newer model. As a quiet regional town rather than a major resort, Dong Hoi tends to sit a little cheaper than the big beach cities, but prices still move with the calendar:
In short, midsummer is the priciest time to rent, while the cooler months either side of the New Year are the best value. Booking a few days ahead is a good habit around July and August, when demand for the Phong Nha route peaks.
Central Vietnam around Dong Hoi has a genuine wet season, not just a gentle drizzle: from September to November the region can see heavy tropical storms and occasional flooding, so riding is best avoided on the worst days. December to February is cooler and often overcast, sometimes drizzly, but calm enough for careful riding. March to May brings pleasant, warming weather with fewer crowds, and June to August is hot, humid and mostly dry — the classic season for the long ride to Phong Nha. If you want reliable dry roads for the cave trip, aim for March to August; if you want the emptiest roads and lowest prices, the shoulder months of late autumn and winter are kinder, storms permitting.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger. Speed limits in town are typically 40–50 km/h, higher on the open highway toward Phong Nha. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Dong Hoi’s in-town traffic is light and easy compared with Vietnam’s big cities, but the road out to Phong Nha carries trucks and buses, so keep a good following distance, use your horn lightly to announce your presence rather than in anger, and take blind bends on the highway with care.
