Ha Giang doesn't feel like the rest of Vietnam — it feels like the edge of it. Limestone spires crowd the horizon, rivers cut canyons a thousand metres deep, and the road climbs and drops in switchbacks for hours at a time. Riding it yourself, past the terraces around Hoang Su Phi and up onto the Dong Van Karst Plateau, is a different trip entirely than watching it slide by from a minibus window. This is one of the last corners of the country where the journey still outranks the destination.

There's a practical reason almost everyone here travels by scooter: no railway reaches this province, and buses only touch the main towns, leaving the loop's villages, markets and viewpoints unreachable any other way. The roads themselves — steep, narrow, occasionally unpaved — reward a nimble 100–150cc bike with enough torque for the climbs, and let you stop wherever a canyon or a market pulls your attention. If you're planning a scooter rental in Ha Giang, this is exactly the terrain it was built for.

Top 10 things to see in Ha Giang by scooter

  1. Ma Pi Leng Pass — Vietnam's most famous mountain pass, a hairpin road cut into the cliffs above the Nho Que River canyon.
  2. Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark — the UNESCO-listed geopark of jagged limestone peaks the entire loop winds through.
  3. Lung Cu Flag Tower — the northernmost point in Vietnam, with a flag tower and views out over the border hills.
  4. Dong Van Old Quarter — a small stone-house town with a lively night market, the classic overnight stop.
  5. Nho Que River boat trip through Tu San Canyon — a boat ride beneath Ma Pi Leng, through the deepest canyon in the country.
  6. Meo Vac town — home to a lively Sunday ethnic minority market and another common loop base.
  7. Quan Ba Heaven Gate — the loop's first big viewpoint, looking down over the Twin Mountains.
  8. Twin Mountains near Tam Son — two perfectly symmetrical hills and an easy photo stop.
  9. Hoang Su Phi rice terraces — among the most photographed terraces in northern Vietnam, best around the September–October harvest.
  10. Du Gia village and waterfall — a quieter jungle valley detour with a waterfall you can swim in.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Ha Giang?

For bikes under 50cc, no licence is required — this covers most standard tourist rentals. Anything above 50cc calls for a motorcycle licence, and foreign riders should carry a Vietnamese licence or an International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention (a 1949 Geneva-style IDP, the kind issued in the US, won't be accepted). Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18, and will ask for a cash deposit or hold your passport as security — amounts vary by shop and by bike.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Ha Giang?

A semi-automatic 110–125cc runs roughly 120,000–150,000 VND per day in low season and 150,000–200,000 VND in high season. Step up to an automatic or a bigger 150cc+ bike and expect 250,000–400,000+ VND per day.

  • Prices climb during September–November, when the rice terraces are at their best and demand peaks.
  • They spike again around Tet, in late January or February, when bikes are scarce.
  • March–May and July–August are quieter and cheaper, though wetter.

When to book a rental scooter in Ha Giang?

High season runs November through April, with a second, smaller peak from June to August. If you want the driest roads and clearest canyon views, aim for October–November or February–April, and book a few days ahead since bikes go fast in these windows. Low season, from May through September, brings rain and lower prices, but also fog and slippery switchbacks worth planning around.

Local traffic rules in Ha Giang

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and checks are routine. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, enforced with roadside breath tests, particularly at night and around holidays. Speed limits are posted rather than fixed nationally, so read the signs as you go — they're generally lower in town than on the open road. Headlights are required after dark, and motorcycles are barred from expressways and a handful of bridges and tunnels, so watch for the exclusion signs on the way out of towns.
