Torrevieja rewards anyone willing to pedal. Wake up early, roll along the Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio with the sea on one side and the town waking up on the other, and you can be swimming at Playa del Cura before the beach chairs fill up. From there the coast keeps unspooling north toward pine-shaded sand and south toward quieter coves — all of it within easy reach if you rent a bike in Torrevieja instead of relying on your feet or a bus timetable.
What makes this town so good for cycling is its shape: flat, compact, and stitched together by a seafront path that does most of the navigating for you. The salt lagoons just outside town add a second, equally flat loop through pink-tinged water and low scrubland, and nothing here demands serious hill legs. A standard city or hybrid bike handles the whole town comfortably; only the longer run down to Punta Prima might tempt you toward an e-bike.
None of this requires a licence — cycling is open to riders of any age in Spain, no card or category needed. Rental shops may still ask for ID and, depending on the operator, a small deposit held on a card. There's no International Driving Permit to worry about either; that only comes into play for motorised vehicles.
Prices move with the season and the type of bike:
July and August are Torrevieja's busiest and priciest months, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through February is the quiet, cheapest stretch, while late spring and early autumn tend to offer the best mix of mild weather and manageable prices — worth considering if your dates are flexible.
Spain drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. A helmet isn't compulsory for adults riding within town, though it's required outside built-up areas and always for riders under 16. Urban speed limits top out at 50 km/h and drop to 30 km/h or lower on narrower streets, so traffic around the promenade stays gentle. Cars must leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking you, and if you're riding after dark outside town, lights and a reflective garment are required. The usual drink-driving limits apply to any vehicle on the road, cycling included, so keep that in mind if a beachside lunch comes with wine.
