Picture crossing the Bãi Cháy Bridge with the whole Cửa Lục strait opening up beneath you, karst islands stacked on the horizon, and no tour bus schedule telling you when to turn back. That is what a motorbike buys you in Ha Long: the freedom to stop wherever the view demands it, whether that is the promenade at Bãi Cháy Beach or a quiet pull-off on the coastal road toward Cẩm Phả. You can rent a motorbike in Ha Long on our website and set your own pace through a city built along water rather than around it.

Ha Long's sights are strung out along a long, hilly coastline and across a bridge-linked peninsula — distances a scooter eats up in minutes but that add up fast in taxi fares if you are moving all day. Two wheels also make the detour to Yên Tử realistic, a roughly 45–50 km ride to Vietnam's spiritual mountain complex that most boat-tour itineraries skip entirely because it does not fit a cruise schedule.

Top 10 things to see in Ha Long by motorbike

  1. Bãi Cháy Beach — the city's main strip of sand and promenade, an easy short ride for a sunset stop before dinner.
  2. Sun World Ha Long Complex (Halong Queen cable car & Sun Wheel) — ride up to the cable car station for panoramic views over Ha Long Bay's karsts without a boat.
  3. Bãi Cháy Bridge — crossing this cable-stayed bridge on two wheels gives a wide view over Cửa Lục strait between the old town and Bãi Cháy.
  4. Tuần Châu Island — a causeway ride out to the island's marina, resorts and the departure point for many bay cruises.
  5. Núi Bài Thơ (Poem Mountain) — a short climb from a roadside parking spot in Hòn Gai for one of the best free viewpoints over the harbor and bay.
  6. Quang Ninh Museum and Library — a striking black-glass cube right on the waterfront, an easy stop between beach and old town.
  7. Ha Long Night Market — a popular evening ride for street food, souvenirs and pearl shops in Bãi Cháy.
  8. Long Tiên Pagoda — the city's largest pagoda in Hòn Gai ward, a quick cultural detour off the main road.
  9. Yên Tử Pagoda Complex — a longer day ride to Vietnam's spiritual mountain complex and the cable car up to Đồng Pagoda.
  10. Cửa Lục Bridge and the coastal road toward Cẩm Phả — open sea views and quieter roads than central Ha Long.

What do you need to rent a motorbike in Ha Long?

For a scooter under 50cc — the standard tourist rental — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Anything larger calls for a motorcycle licence, and as a foreign visitor you will need either a Vietnamese licence or a valid International Driving Permit issued under the 1968 convention and endorsed for motorcycles; the 1949-convention IDP issued in the US, Japan and a few other countries is not accepted. Rental shops generally set their own minimum age, usually 18 even where the law allows younger riders on smaller machines. Expect to leave a deposit, either cash or your passport held as security, with the amount varying by shop and bike.

How much does it cost to rent a motorbike in Ha Long?

A standard automatic scooter runs around 600,000–700,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 800,000–1,000,000 VND during peak weeks. If you want something bigger for the Yên Tử run or the coastal road, 150–300cc touring bikes typically cost 900,000–1,300,000 VND and up.

  • Prices climb around Tết and the New Year holidays, and again through the domestic summer beach season from June to August.
  • Rates ease off in the shoulder months, when demand is lower and the weather is still workable.

When to book a rental motorbike in Ha Long?

High season runs December to January, when dry-season weather is at its best and Tết drives prices up and availability down, with a second surge in June to August for domestic summer travel. February to April and September to October are the quieter, cheaper months, though autumn carries some rain risk. Booking a few days ahead is sensible in low season and worth doing well in advance around Tết, when bikes can simply sell out.

Local traffic rules in Ha Long

Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorbike or scooter, and police do check. There is a zero blood-alcohol limit for anyone riding, enforced through roadside breath tests, particularly at night and around holidays. Speed limits are lower in built-up areas than on the open road and lower for motorbikes than for cars, so read the posted signs rather than assuming a flat number. Motorbikes are barred from expressways and some bridges and tunnels, and headlights are required after dark.
