Da Lat sits in the central highlands, its air noticeably cooler than the coast, and the whole town seems built for two wheels. Wind up past Xuan Huong Lake in the morning mist, then push on toward Langbiang Mountain, where the road climbs into pine forest before the final jeep or hike to the summit. On our website you can rent a scooter in Da Lat and set your own pace — stopping for coffee at a roadside stall, detouring down a track you spotted on the way, or simply turning around because the view got better a kilometre back.
This is hillier, twistier terrain than most Vietnamese cities, and public transport barely covers it, so a scooter isn't just convenient here — it's how almost everyone gets around. The switchback roads through pine forest are genuinely enjoyable to ride, not just a way to dodge traffic, and they open up stops far outside the town center, like Elephant Falls or the tea hills at Cau Dat, that bus tours skip entirely.
For scooters under 50cc — the class most visitors rent — no driving licence is required in Vietnam. Go above that and you'll need a motorcycle licence, plus an International Driving Permit endorsed for motorcycles if you're not a Vietnamese resident (note that only a 1968-convention IDP is valid here; the 1949 Geneva type issued in the US and a few other countries is not accepted). Rental shops generally expect riders to be at least 18, even though under-50cc bikes can legally be ridden younger. Expect to leave a deposit, usually cash, sometimes your passport held as security, with the amount varying by shop and bike.
A standard 110–125cc automatic runs around 130,000–150,000 VND per day in low season, rising to roughly 180,000–250,000 VND in high season. Newer automatics, manual bikes or dirt bikes can go from 300,000 VND upward.
High season runs roughly November to April, with Tết — late January to mid-February, the date shifts yearly — the single busiest stretch, when bikes run scarce and some shops close for the holiday. Low season falls in the hotter, wetter months further south, though Da Lat's own quiet stretch lines up with March to May and September to November, when prices ease off and availability is easy. Booking a few days ahead is enough outside of Tết, but during the holiday itself it's worth reserving well in advance.
Vietnam drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any scooter, and police do check. There's a zero blood-alcohol limit for riders — any detectable alcohol is an offence, and checkpoints are common at night and around holidays. Speed limits are lower in town than on the open road and are always signposted, so read the signs rather than assume a number. Headlights are required after dark, and scooters are barred from expressways and a few major bridges and tunnels, marked with a clear no-motorcycle symbol.
