Trang doesn't announce itself the way Phuket or Krabi do, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on four wheels rather than two feet. Rent a quad bike in Trang and you can string together a day that runs from the pier at Pak Meng, where longtail boats leave for Ko Kradan and Ko Muk, down the coast road to Sikao, and inland to a jungle waterfall — all without hunting for buses or haggling over taxi fares. It's the kind of riding that turns a flat itinerary into an actual adventure, past mangrove canals and old shophouse streets that most visitors never see.
What makes a quad bike the right call here is the geography itself. Trang's centre is small, but everything that makes the province special — Pak Meng's coastline, the Sikao coastal road, Kantang's old port, the inland waterfalls — sits spread across 20 to 40 km of quiet, mostly flat secondary roads. A scooter feels a bit exposed on sandy coastal pull-offs, and a full-size motorbike is more machine than the traffic here demands. A quad splits the difference: stable, easy to handle, and with enough cargo space for towels, snorkel gear or a bag of market fruit from Kantang.
Thailand doesn't register most quad bikes for public roads, so they're generally ridden on off-road tours or private tracks rather than the open highway — rules on licences vary by operator, and it's worth checking with your rental shop directly. Where a road-legal entitlement is required, the same logic as for scooters and motorcycles applies: a motorcycle-category licence, either Thai or your home licence backed by an International Driving Permit. Most shops set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit — it's best to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the original document itself.
A standard single-seat quad runs around 550-650 THB per day in low season, climbing to roughly 900-1,300 THB per day when demand peaks. If you want something bigger — a twin-seat or automatic premium ATV — expect 1,800-2,800 THB per day.
High season runs November through February, when the weather is dry and cool and demand — and prices — climb accordingly. Low season falls between June and September, the rainy months, when you'll find better rates and a quieter coast road. Booking a week or two ahead during the high season is a sensible habit, especially if you want a specific model.
Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right and keep that in mind at junctions. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and checkpoints do enforce it with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural roads outside it. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, tightened to 0.02% for younger or newly licensed riders, and roadside breath tests are common, particularly around holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers whenever you ride — riding without the right licence class or a helmet will typically void your insurance too.
