Trang doesn't announce itself the way Phuket or Krabi do, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. Rent a scooter and the town's rubber plantations open onto quiet coast roads leading to Pak Meng Beach, where longtail boats wait to ferry divers out to Koh Mook and Koh Kradan, or south to the mist-cooled pools below Sairung Waterfall. Nobody else on the road is competing for the same view.

Trang's attractions sit 15–40 km apart, strung along flat, lightly trafficked roads that a songthaew simply won't detour for. A scooter lets you chain a waterfall, a beach and a seafood shack into one loop, then change your mind halfway through. It's the difference between seeing what's on someone else's itinerary and seeing what's actually along the way.

Top 10 things to see in Trang by scooter

  1. Pak Meng Beach — the main scooter-accessible beach west of town, with a pier for boats to Koh Mook and Koh Kradan and seafood shacks lined up for sunset.
  2. Hat Chang Lang (Chang Lang Beach) — a long, quiet, casuarina-shaded stretch just south of Pak Meng, part of Hat Chao Mai National Park.
  3. Hat Chao Mai National Park — mangrove boardwalks and coastal viewpoints, a short detour off the Pak Meng road.
  4. Yong Ling Waterfall — a popular multi-tiered waterfall with natural pools, a classic inland day-trip ride.
  5. Sairung Waterfall — the "Rainbow Waterfall" near Palian, known for a high single drop that throws up mist rainbows on sunny mornings.
  6. Kantang Old Railway Station and Pier — a 1913 station built for a royal visit that never quite happened, and the old pier on the Trang River.
  7. Trang Old Town — Sino-Portuguese shophouses along Thap Thiang Road, best explored slowly in the evening with the weekend walking street in full swing.
  8. Sikao coastal road — the run linking Trang town to Sikao and on to Pak Meng, past rubber plantations with glimpses of the Andaman coast.
  9. Ton Te Waterfall — near Palian, easy to fold into the same southern loop as Sairung.
  10. Hat Yao pier — the departure point for boats to Koh Libong, Thailand's best-known dugong-watching spot; the coast road down is scenic even if you skip the boat.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Trang?

Thai law requires a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most rentals set a minimum age around 18. Expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the original.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Trang?

A standard automatic scooter runs roughly 150–200 THB per day in low season and 250–350 THB per day in high season. Bigger bikes (150cc and up) or newer automatics cost more, especially around the holidays.

  • December–January (peak season and New Year) brings the highest prices.
  • May–June and September–October, the quieter rainy months, are the cheapest time to rent.
  • Larger or newer models add a premium of 400–600+ THB per day year-round.

When to book a rental scooter in Trang?

High season runs November through February, when dry, sunny weather makes the coast roads and waterfall trips easiest — book a few days ahead if you're arriving in December or January. Low season stretches May through October, during the southwest monsoon; prices drop and roads are quieter, though sudden downpours are common, so pack a rain shell and check conditions before heading out to Sairung or Ton Te.

Local traffic rules in Trang

Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside breath tests are routine, especially around holidays. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you at all times — and remember that riding without the correct licence class or without a helmet typically voids both your rental and travel insurance.
