Step off the BTS and Bangkok still has plenty in store for you — you just need your own wheels to reach it. Rent a scooter in Bangkok and the city opens up fast: one afternoon you're weaving toward the golden prang of Wat Arun for sunset light across the Chao Phraya, the next you're ducking down a soi in Chinatown chasing the smell of grilled skewers. A scooter turns a checklist of sights into an actual afternoon of riding.

Bangkok is built for two wheels and against everything else. The BTS and MRT cover only a fraction of the city, taxis stall for an hour in gridlock on Sukhumvit, and the old town's narrow sois were never meant for cars. A scooter slips through where nothing else can, parks for free outside a temple gate, and can even roll onto a short cross-river ferry to reach places a car will never see.

Top 10 things to see in Bangkok by scooter

  1. Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) — a riverside temple with a climbable prang; ride over for golden light across the Chao Phraya at sunset.
  2. Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace — Bangkok's most famous religious-royal complex, with easy scooter parking nearby in Rattanakosin.
  3. Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) — home to the giant reclining Buddha, a short ride from the Grand Palace along the old city loop.
  4. Chatuchak Weekend Market — a sprawling market on the northern edge of the old city, easily reached without fighting the BTS crowds.
  5. Khao San Road — the backpacker strip, best seen on a night ride past food stalls and street life.
  6. Chinatown (Yaowarat Road) — a neon-lit food corridor made for a slow evening ride.
  7. Lumpini Park — a central green loop, ideal for an early ride before the heat and traffic build.
  8. Asiatique The Riverfront — a riverside night market and ferris wheel, a straightforward evening ride along the Chao Phraya.
  9. Bang Krachao — Bangkok's "green lung," a car-light river island reached by a short ferry, with jungle and canal roads to explore.
  10. Erawan Shrine — a landmark Hindu shrine at a major intersection, a natural stop when riding through Ratchaprasong.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Bangkok?

To legally ride in Thailand you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and without the right licence your insurance is void. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit; it's safer to offer cash or a passport photocopy rather than handing over your actual passport.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Bangkok?

Prices swing a lot with the season. Expect around 190 THB per day in low season, climbing to 350–600 THB per day in high season, with larger or newer automatic scooters running 800–1,500 THB per day.

  • Cheapest months: June to September, when tourist numbers drop, though rain is frequent.
  • Most expensive months: December and January, when Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year overlap and push both rates and availability tight.

When to book a rental scooter in Bangkok?

High season runs November to February, the cool, dry stretch that's also Bangkok's most popular and priciest window — book ahead if you're arriving then. Low season runs roughly May to October, during the southwest monsoon, when rain showers are common but prices drop and scooters are easy to find on short notice.

Local traffic rules in Bangkok

Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 90 km/h on rural highways; scooters are banned from motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% for newer or younger drivers, and roadside breath tests are common around holidays. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you at all times — checkpoints are routine in tourist areas.
