Ko Chang doesn't do buses or metered taxis the way Bangkok or Phuket might have led you to expect. What it does have is one long, hilly coastal road looping around a jungle-covered island, and a scooter is how you actually get to use it. Ride south from the crowds of Hat Sai Khao and within twenty minutes you're parking at a quiet café table over the water at Kai Bae Beach, or continuing on to the fishing stilts of Bang Bao, where the road simply runs out into the sea. Nobody who's spent a day chasing waterfalls and empty viewpoints here on two wheels goes back to waiting for songthaews.

The island suits a scooter better than almost anywhere else in Thailand. There's no train, no proper bus network, and songthaew drivers charge per trip and per passenger, which adds up fast over a multi-stop day. The main road is only around 70–80 km end to end, but it climbs and curves along the coast, linking beaches, waterfalls and villages that would otherwise take real planning to string together. With your own scooter, that whole loop becomes one relaxed day rather than a logistics problem.

Top 10 things to see in Ko Chang by scooter

  1. Hat Sai Khao (White Sand Beach) — the island's main strip and the natural starting point for any ride.
  2. Kai Bae Beach — a quieter stretch with sea-view cafés, a short hop south of White Sand.
  3. Klong Prao Beach — a long beach backed by a lagoon and mangroves, easy coastal riding.
  4. Lonely Beach (Hat Tha Nam) — the backpacker beach with bars, a classic scooter day-trip stop.
  5. Bang Bao fishing village — a stilted pier village at the southern tip, end-of-road riding and fresh seafood.
  6. Klong Plu Waterfall — a jungle waterfall with a swimming pool, a short walk from the west-coast road.
  7. Than Mayom Waterfall — multi-tiered falls on the east coast, near the national park ranger station.
  8. Salak Kok Mangrove village — a worthwhile detour on the quieter east side, with kayaking through the mangroves.
  9. The viewpoint near Bailan / Chai Chet — a hilly coastal lookout between Kai Bae and Bang Bao, a favourite photo stop.
  10. The east coast ring road toward Long Beach and Salak Phet — the less touristy side of the island, past fishing villages, ideal for a full-loop ride.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Ko Chang?

Legally, you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence, or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit that carries a motorcycle entitlement. Some shops on the island won't ask to see it, but police checkpoints do, and insurance is normally void without one. Most rental shops set a minimum age of 18. A deposit is standard practice; where possible, offer cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than handing over the original document.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Ko Chang?

Expect to pay roughly 150–200 THB per day for a basic automatic in low season, and 250–350 THB per day in high season. Larger or newer automatics from 125cc up, and manual or semi-automatic bikes, tend to run 300–500 THB per day.

  • Prices climb through December and January, the busiest weeks of the year.
  • May, June, September and October are the cheapest months, with lighter demand and some shops closed.

When to book a rental scooter in Ko Chang?

High season runs November to February, when the roads are driest and prices sit at their peak, especially around the December–January holidays. Low season stretches May to October, through the southwest monsoon, when rain is more frequent but rentals are noticeably cheaper. Booking a few days ahead is enough outside the Christmas and New Year rush; during that peak stretch, earlier is safer.

Local traffic rules in Ko Chang

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on rural roads, which covers most of Ko Chang's coastal route. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, checked routinely at roadside stops, especially around holidays — ride sober, since a violation can also void your insurance.
