Picture swapping the tour bus for your own set of wheels and rattling up the ramp of Phanom Rung as the morning light hits the sandstone towers, then rolling on through rice paddies toward the lotus ponds of Prasat Muang Tam. That's a normal afternoon once you rent a quad-bike in Buriram — the province rewards anyone willing to go under their own power, and a quad puts every temple, reservoir and backroad within easy reach.
Buriram isn't a walkable old town you can cover on foot. Its best sights — Khmer ruins, the MotoGP circuit, quiet reservoirs — sit tens of kilometres apart along rural roads, and some of the temple approaches turn to gravel or dirt before you arrive. A scooter struggles on that surface; a quad-bike doesn't. Traffic outside Buriram city is light and easygoing, so even riders unfamiliar with driving in Thailand can explore confidently and stop wherever the view demands it.
Quad-bikes and ATVs aren't generally registered for public-road use in Thailand, so most Buriram rentals run as guided off-road tours or private-track sessions rather than open street driving. Licence requirements depend on the operator, and a road-legal quad would need the appropriate driving entitlement. Most shops ask riders to be 18 or over and will hold a deposit — it's better to offer cash or a photocopy of your passport than the original document itself.
Expect around 550–650 THB per day in low season, rising to 900–1,300 THB per day in high season. Larger-CC or multi-seat quads run from roughly 1,500 to 2,500 THB per day.
High season runs November through February, when dry roads and cooler air make for the best riding — book ahead if you're coming for the MotoGP weekend in October, since bikes sell out fast. Low season stretches May to October, during the southwest monsoon; rain is more frequent but rentals are cheaper and availability is easy, so this is a good window if your plans are flexible.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and are actively enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on rural highways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, tightened to 0.02% for drivers under 20, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Carry your licence and rental documents at all times, and watch for sand or gravel on temple approach roads and sudden downpours during monsoon season.
