Ko Tao's tar road runs out fast once you leave Mae Had, and that's exactly the point. Rent a quad bike in Ko Tao and you can climb the steep spine above Sairee Beach, drop down the rocky track into Hin Wong Bay, and be parked above the cliffs at John-Suwan Viewpoint before the day-trip boats even land. A scooter will get you along the coast road; a quad is what actually gets you up and over the island's hills to the bays that most visitors only see from a speedboat window.

At only around 21 km², Ko Tao is small enough to circle in a day, but its interior is hilly, partly unpaved, and has no real public transport to speak of — songthaews stick to the main loop and leave the east coast alone. That's where a quad earns its keep: low gearing and four-wheel grip handle the steep, loose-surface climbs to bays like Tanote and Hin Wong far more comfortably than a scooter, and you're never covering huge distances, so the quad's strength — stability over speed — suits the island perfectly.

Top 10 things to see in Ko Tao by quad bike

  1. John-Suwan Viewpoint — the island's most famous viewpoint, looking down over Chalok Baan Kao and Shark Bay from a headland just off the main road.
  2. Sairee Beach — the longest beach on Ko Tao, an easy flat ride from most rental shops in Mae Had and the natural spot for sunset drinks.
  3. Tanote Bay (Ao Tanote) — a scenic east-coast bay reached via one of the island's steeper, more adventurous quad routes.
  4. Freedom Beach — a quiet cove on the southwest coast, reached by a short off-road descent, good for a swim away from the crowds.
  5. Chalok Baan Kao — a wide southern bay with a relaxed village feel, a natural stop on the way down from John-Suwan Viewpoint.
  6. Shark Bay (Ao Thian Ok) — a rocky southeastern bay where blacktip reef sharks patrol the shallows, close to John-Suwan Viewpoint.
  7. Hin Wong Bay — a rugged, boulder-lined bay on the east coast and one of the most technical, scenic quad tracks on the island.
  8. Mango Bay Viewpoint — a hillside lookout on the north coast over turquoise Mango Bay, a favourite snorkelling stop.
  9. Aow Leuk Bay (Ao Leuk) — a calm southeastern bay with a beach bar, a good turnaround point on an east-coast loop.
  10. Nang Yuan Viewpoint (Sairee Hill) — a lookout over the water toward Koh Nang Yuan's three-island lagoon, reachable by road even though the island itself is boat-access only.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in Ko Tao?

Quad bikes here are mostly used off-road, on tours and private tracks rather than the public highway, so licence checks are looser than for a scooter — but bring your driving licence and, ideally, an International Driving Permit anyway, since requirements vary from shop to shop. Most rental places set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up. A deposit is standard practice; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in Ko Tao?

Expect to pay around 500–800 THB per day in low season, rising to 800–1500 THB per day in high season. Larger, newer or automatic four-seater models run 1200–2000 THB per day.

  • Prices peak in December–January and again in July–August.
  • Rates drop during April–June and September–October.

When to book a rental quad bike in Ko Tao?

High season on Ko Tao runs November through February, with December–January the busiest and priciest stretch — book a few days ahead if you're arriving then. Low season falls in April–June and September–October, when prices ease off and quads are easier to find on short notice. Note that the Gulf coast islands, Ko Tao included, run wettest around October–December, so pack for the odd downpour even outside the mainland's rainy season.

Local traffic rules in Ko Tao

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and are enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits in built-up areas are around 60 km/h, rising on rural roads, though on Ko Tao's steep, narrow tracks you'll rarely get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside checks do happen even on a small island, so leave the quad parked if you've been drinking. Ride cautiously on Hin Wong and Tanote's rougher sections, especially after rain, when loose gravel and mud make the tracks slippery.
