Tak province rewards travellers who go off-script. Away from Thailand's beach circuit, this is a land of forested hills, border rivers and back roads that a scooter simply can't handle. **Rent a quad bike in Tak** and the whole province opens up — from the trading stalls of Rim Moei Border Market on the Moei River to the misty overlook at Doi Musoe, where sunrise spreads a sea of cloud below the ridgeline. This is riding for the sake of the journey, not just the destination.
Tak's two hubs, Tak town and Mae Sot, sit close together, but almost everything worth seeing lies well beyond them, linked by hill roads and stretches of unpaved track. A quad bike is built for exactly that: it grips loose gravel and forest trails that would strand a scooter, covers long distances faster than trekking, and takes river-adjacent routes and dirt crossings in its stride. If you're heading toward Thailand's largest waterfall or along the reservoir roads near Bhumibol Dam, this is the vehicle that gets you there and back in a day.
Quad bikes are mostly ridden off-road here rather than registered for public roads, so requirements vary by operator. As a rule, you should be 18 or over, and it's worth carrying your home driving licence together with an International Driving Permit, since rental shops and insurers may ask for one even for off-road tours. Expect to leave a deposit — ask for a cash deposit or a passport photocopy rather than handing over your actual passport.
A basic quad runs around 550-650 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 900-1,300 THB per day in high season. Larger-engine or newer models cost more, typically 1,800-2,800 THB per day.
November through February is Tak's high season — cooler weather, clearer mountain views, and the best conditions for long rides out to Thi Lo Su or Bhumibol Dam, but also the highest prices, so book ahead. If you'd rather save money and don't mind the odd downpour, May to September is quieter and cheaper, though forest tracks can turn muddy. Either way, if you want to **rent a quad bike in Tak**, just use the search form at the top of the page.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike and are enforced with on-the-spot fines, so don't skip one even for a short hop. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in towns and up to 90 km/h on rural highways, and the blood-alcohol limit is a strict 0.05%, checked routinely at roadside stops. Keep your licence, IDP and rental documents on you at all times — checkpoints are common on the roads out of Mae Sot. Have a nice trip!
