Tak doesn't announce itself the way Chiang Mai or Phuket do, and that's exactly the appeal. This is a province of jungle mountains and border towns, where the real prize is Thi Lo Su Waterfall, Thailand's largest, hidden deep in Umphang district at the end of a road most tourists never attempt. Getting there means riding Route 1090, the so-called Sky Highway, and a scooter or motorcycle is what turns that road from a rumour into an actual day. If you want to rent a motorbike in Tak, this is the province that makes the case for two wheels better than almost anywhere else in the country.

Tak's geography leaves you little choice. The best sights — Thi Lo Su, the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, the misty ridge at Doi Musoe — sit far from any train line or bus schedule, connected only by long, curving mountain roads. Traffic in Mae Sot and Tak town itself is light and easy, forgiving if you're still building confidence, while the switchbacks further out reward riders who already know what they're doing. Few provinces make motorbike rental in Tak feel this necessary rather than just convenient.

Top 10 things to see in Tak by motorbike

  1. Thi Lo Su Waterfall — Thailand's largest waterfall, deep in Umphang district, and the reason most riders come to Tak at all.
  2. Mae Sot – Umphang Highway (Route 1090) — the legendary "Sky Highway," roughly 1,219 curves through jungle mountains and one of the country's best motorcycle roads.
  3. Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary — UNESCO-listed forest along Route 1090, with river crossings and viewpoints worth the stop.
  4. Lan Sang National Park — an easy waterfall and forest loop just outside Mae Sot, good for a half-day ride.
  5. Taksin Maharat National Park — home to a 1,000-year-old banyan tree and the Mae Ka Sa waterfall, just off the Mae Sot–Tak road.
  6. Mae Sot Old Town — a Thai-Myanmar border town of markets, teak architecture and Burmese-Thai food, and a natural base to ride out from.
  7. Rim Moei Border Market — a riverside market at the Myanmar crossing, an easy short ride from Mae Sot.
  8. Doi Musoe Viewpoint — a hill-tribe village lookout near Mae Sot, known for sea-of-mist mornings.
  9. Wat Phra Borommathat Tak — a hilltop Burmese-style temple overlooking Tak town, a scenic stop on your way out of the city.
  10. Bhumibol Dam — Thailand's largest dam and reservoir north of Tak town, best saved for a longer loop with lake views.

What do you need to rent a motorbike in Tak?

By law you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Rental shops don't always check, but police checkpoints do, and your insurance is generally void without the right paperwork. Most shops set a minimum age around 18. Expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.

How much does it cost to rent a motorbike in Tak?

A standard automatic scooter runs around 900-1,000 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 1,200-1,500 THB per day at the busiest times of year. If you want something bigger for Route 1090, a 300cc-plus motorcycle typically costs 1,500-2,500 THB per day or more, regardless of season.

  • Prices climb in November-February and around the mid-April Songkran holiday, when demand peaks.
  • They drop from May to October, during the rainy low season, when tourist numbers thin out.

When to book a rental motorbike in Tak?

November through February is both the best riding weather and the priciest stretch of the year — cool, dry, and popular, so it pays to book ahead. May to October brings the southwest monsoon and lower rates, with sudden downpours to watch for on routes like the Sky Highway. Songkran in mid-April is worth avoiding on two wheels altogether, as it's statistically the most dangerous week on Thai roads.

Local traffic rules in Tak

Thailand drives on the left, so overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce this with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in towns and up to 90 km/h on rural highways like Route 1090, where blind curves are constant. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% for riders under 20, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Carry your licence, IDP and rental documents at all times.
