Nan doesn't announce itself the way Chiang Mai or Pai do — it's the province travellers reach after they've already fallen for the mountains, and once you're here, a motorbike is what turns the province into a story you can actually tell. Ride the winding curves of Route 1256 up through Doi Phu Kha National Park, catch the sea of mist at Doi Samer Dao Viewpoint before the day's heat sets in, or roll down to Bo Kluea to watch villagers still working the salt wells by hand, the way they have for centuries. This is riding for the sake of the road itself, not just the destination.
Nan town itself is small enough to stroll, but everything that makes this province worth the detour — the mountain passes, the hill-tribe villages, the hot springs and viewpoints — sits 30 to 60 km out along quiet, winding roads that no bus or songthaew will take you down. Traffic in town is light even by Thai standards, so if you've never ridden abroad before, Nan is a forgiving place to start, and a rented motorbike is really the only way to see the province properly in a day.
You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence paired with an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Some shops in Nan will hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and without the right licence your insurance is void. Most rental shops set a minimum age of 18. Expect to leave a deposit; we'd suggest offering cash or a photocopy of your passport rather than the passport itself.
A standard automatic scooter runs 900–1,000 THB per day in low season and 1,100–1,300 THB in high season. If you're planning to tackle Doi Phu Kha's mountain roads, a 250–300cc bike like a Honda CRF300L or Kawasaki D-Tracker is worth the upgrade, at around 1,200–1,800 THB per day.
High season runs November to February, the cool, clear months when the mist views at Doi Samer Dao are at their best — book a few days ahead if you're visiting then. Low season is June to September, during the southwest monsoon, when rates are lower but sudden downpours are more likely, so build some flexibility into your route.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger and are enforced with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits are around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural highways — Nan's mountain roads reward a slower pace anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and checkpoints are common, so carry your licence, IDP and rental papers at all times.
