Nan doesn't feel like the rest of Thailand. There are no crowds pushing past you on the pavement, no scooters weaving three-deep at every junction — just a quiet valley town where the streets around Wat Phumin stay easy and flat, and the Nan River drifts past at walking pace. Rent a bicycle here and you can be at the temple's famous "whisper of love" mural in ten minutes, then coast along the riverside promenade before the evening market even lights up.
What makes Nan so good for cycling is exactly this smallness. The old town is compact, the roads are calm, and almost every landmark worth seeing sits within a short pedal of the next. Riders after more of a challenge simply point their wheels toward the hills: the roads out to Doi Phu Kha climb hard and long, which is why most visitors save those for a scooter and keep the pedal bike for the town itself.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle in Nan, and there's no legal helmet requirement for adult cyclists — though we'd still recommend wearing one on the busier roads. Shops will typically ask for a deposit, which is negotiable; it's best to offer cash or a photocopy of your ID rather than hand over your passport. If you're planning to switch to a scooter for the hill routes, you'll need a motorcycle-category licence, or your home licence plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) with the motorcycle entitlement.
Average rental prices run around 100–120 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 150–200 THB per day in high season. Higher-end mountain or electric bikes can cost 300–500 THB per day or more.
High season runs November to February — the cool, dry months when Nan is at its most popular, and also its most expensive for rentals. Low season falls between May and October, through the southwest monsoon, when prices drop and the town is much quieter. If you're visiting over the high-season peak, it's worth booking your bicycle rental in Nan a few days ahead to make sure your preferred model is available.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right, even on a bicycle. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, but they are compulsory for both rider and passenger on any motorcycle or scooter, and police do enforce this with on-the-spot fines. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas and up to 90 km/h on rural roads, though this matters more once you're on two motorised wheels. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and roadside checks are common, especially around public holidays — worth bearing in mind if you're cycling back from dinner after a few drinks.
