There are no cars on Ko Phi Phi Don — just narrow concrete paths, wandering longtail-boat crews and the occasional motorbike. A bicycle fits this island perfectly, and pedalling it gives you a completely different feel for the place than the tour boats that rush everyone straight to Maya Bay. Ride the flat stretch from Tonsai Pier out toward Long Beach for a swim away from the crowds, or coast along the isthmus to Loh Dalum Bay for sunset, when the lagoon-like water turns gold. If you want to rent a bicycle on Ko Phi Phi Don, our website connects you with local operators who know exactly which routes are actually rideable.
Phi Phi's town center is pedestrian-only in places, and much of the island beyond Tonsai and Loh Dalum climbs steeply into jungle or breaks into footpath, so cars and even most motorbikes never really took hold here. A bicycle is the one vehicle that suits both worlds: quick enough for the coastal paths near the village, light enough to walk over the rougher patches, and free of the point-to-point speedboat fares that add up fast if you're relying on boats to get around. For short hops between beaches and viewpoints, bicycle rental on Ko Phi Phi Don is simply the most practical way to move.
No licence is required to rent a bicycle, and there's no legal helmet requirement for adult cyclists here, though we'd still recommend wearing one on the hillier routes. Shops generally expect riders to be able to handle a bike safely rather than setting a strict minimum age. A deposit is usually asked for — we suggest offering cash or a photocopy of your ID rather than handing over your passport.
Average rental price is around 100–120 THB per day during low season, rising to roughly 150–200 THB per day in high season. Better-quality mountain or hybrid bikes, where available, can run 250–400 THB per day.
High season runs from November to February, when trails are driest and prices sit at their highest — booking a few days ahead is worth it if you want a decent bike during this stretch. Low season, from May to October, brings quieter paths and cheaper daily rates, though sudden downpours are common, so keep an eye on the sky before heading out to the far side of the island.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left on shared paths and overtake on the right. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, but they're a smart habit on the steeper hillside routes. Speed isn't really a factor on Phi Phi's narrow paths, but stay alert for pedestrians, luggage carts and the occasional motorbike squeezing past. If you're combining cycling with any evening drinks, remember Thailand's roads are patrolled seriously around the country, and the same common sense applies even on a bicycle: ride sober, especially after dark when paths are poorly lit.
