Rayong doesn't announce itself the way Phuket or Chiang Mai do, and that's exactly its charm. Rent a bicycle here and you can drift along the Mae Nam Rayong promenade in the cool of the morning, stop for grilled squid near Ban Phe Pier as the Samet ferries load up, then coast out to Hat Mae Ramphueng for an afternoon on a beach that rarely sees a tour bus. It's the kind of town that rewards slow travel, and a bike is the natural way to see it.
What makes Rayong so easy on two wheels is the geography itself: the town, river and coast sit close together, with only a few flat kilometres between them, and traffic is a fraction of what you'd fight in Bangkok or Pattaya. A rental bicycle lets you link the pier, the beaches and the temples without ever needing a car or a scooter, and it opens up quieter routes — the shaded paths of Suan Son pine park, the riverside promenade — that simply aren't as pleasant on a motor vehicle.
Nothing complicated: no licence is required to ride a bicycle in Thailand, and there's no legal helmet requirement for adult cyclists, though we'd still recommend wearing one. Most shops set their own minimum age, generally around 18, and will ask for a small deposit — it's best to offer cash or a photocopy of your ID rather than handing over your passport.
A basic city bike runs around 120 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 150-250 THB per day in high season. If you'd rather ride a mountain bike or e-bike, expect around 250-400 THB per day.
November through February is the sweet spot — dry, cool and comfortable for riding, though this is also when demand and prices peak, so it's worth booking a little ahead. If you're after cheaper rates and don't mind the odd afternoon shower, May to October offers lower prices and thinner crowds.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and pass on the right. Helmets aren't legally required for adult cyclists, but they're a sensible habit on shared roads. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in built-up areas, rising to 90 km/h on rural highways, so stay alert around faster traffic when crossing junctions. If you're mixing cycling with a scooter ride later in your trip, remember the blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, and checkpoints are common, so plan accordingly.
