Picture the road curling out of Ao Nang, limestone karsts rising on one side and the Andaman Sea flashing between palm trunks on the other. That's what a morning on two wheels looks like here. With a scooter you can be soaking up the view from Ao Nang Beach before breakfast and pulling up to the pier for a longtail crossing to Railay by mid-morning — no waiting on a songthaew, no haggling over a taxi fare, just you and the road.

Krabi's best spots are scattered along the coast and tucked inland, often 10–50 km apart, which makes them awkward and pricey to string together by tour van or shared taxi. Traffic outside Ao Nang and Krabi Town stays light, roads are in decent shape, and a scooter lets you build your own route — a beach in the morning, a jungle pool in the afternoon, dinner by the river at night. It's the kind of freedom that turns a checklist of attractions into an actual day out.

Top 10 things to see in Krabi by scooter

  1. Ao Nang Beach — the easiest first ride in town, and the launch point for longtail boats to the islands and Railay.
  2. Railay Beach viewpoint (via Ao Nam Mao pier) — ride to the pier, then hop a short longtail crossing to the karst cliffs and one of Krabi's most photographed viewpoints.
  3. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) — 1,237 steps up to a hilltop Buddha and a panorama over the whole province.
  4. Emerald Pool and Blue Pool (Sa Morakot, Khlong Thom) — jungle-fed freshwater pools at the end of a scenic inland ride south of town.
  5. Krabi Town riverfront and night market — a relaxed evening ride for street food and views over the Krabi River.
  6. Ao Thalane — a mangrove bay made for kayaking, and a quieter escape from the Ao Nang crowds.
  7. Susan Hoi (Shell Cemetery) — 75-million-year-old fossilised shell slabs right on the coast near Krabi Town.
  8. Khao Khanab Nam viewpoint — twin limestone hills guarding the river mouth, a classic photo stop on the way into town.
  9. Thung Teao Forest Natural Park — the jungle trail network that leads to the Emerald Pool, worth lingering in on its own.
  10. Klong Root hot springs — natural hot pools in the forest, easy to pair with the Emerald Pool on the same loop.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Krabi?

To legally rent a scooter in Krabi you need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence backed by an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle entitlement. Shops rarely check, but police checkpoints do, and riding without the right paperwork usually voids your insurance. Most rental places set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit; it's worth offering cash or a passport copy rather than handing over your actual passport.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Krabi?

A basic automatic like a Honda Click or Scoopy runs around 150–180 THB per day in low season, rising to roughly 250–350 THB per day in high season, often cheaper still on a weekly or monthly deal. If you want more power for the longer inland routes, bigger bikes such as a Honda PCX160, CRF300 or Kawasaki Versys go for about 800–1,500 THB per day.

  • Cheapest: May–September, the low season.
  • Priciest: December–February, peak high season.

When to book a rental scooter in Krabi?

November through February is Krabi's high season — the driest, most popular stretch, and where prices climb, so booking a few days ahead is a good idea. May to October brings the southwest monsoon: showers roll through, crowds thin out, and daily rates drop noticeably, making it a smart window if you don't mind the occasional downpour.

Local traffic rules in Krabi

Thailand drives on the left, so keep to that side and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do stop riders without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and up to 90 km/h on rural roads outside it. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, lower for new licence holders, and roadside checks are common, especially around holidays. Watch for sand and loose gravel on coastal bends, and keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you at all times.
