Lampang doesn't announce itself the way Chiang Mai does, and that's exactly the point. Swing a motorcycle south of town to Wat Phra That Lampang Luang, the best-preserved teak temple complex in the north, and you'll likely have the courtyard to yourself. Loop back past Wat Chedi Sao, where rows of white-and-gold chedis catch the late afternoon light, and you'll understand why locals call this the province tourism forgot — in the best way. Rent a scooter in Lampang and the whole province opens up: temples, hills, hot springs, elephants, all within easy reach of a single tank of fuel.
This is a spread-out kind of sightseeing. Temples cluster in town, but the elephant hospital, the reservoir and the waterfalls sit well outside it, out where tuk-tuks don't bother going and walking simply isn't an option. Traffic here is a fraction of what you'd fight in Chiang Mai, so riding feels relaxed rather than nerve-wracking. And the roads heading into the hills toward Chae Son curve and climb enough that the ride itself becomes part of the day, not just the means of getting somewhere.
You'll need a motorcycle-category licence — either a Thai licence or your home licence backed by an International Driving Permit carrying the motorcycle entitlement. Rental shops here will often hand over the keys without checking, but police checkpoints do check, and your insurance is void without the right paperwork. Most shops set their own minimum rental age, generally 18 and up. Expect to leave a deposit; ask to pay cash or leave a photocopy of your passport rather than the document itself.
A standard automatic scooter (110–125cc) runs roughly 900–1,000 THB per day in low season, climbing to about 1,200–1,500 THB during high season. Bigger bikes — 300cc and up, or premium touring models — start around 1,500–2,500 THB per day.
High season runs November through February, when cool, dry weather makes riding out to Chae Son or the dam genuinely pleasant — book a few days ahead if you're arriving in December or January. Low season stretches May to October, through the southwest monsoon; prices drop and roads are quieter, though afternoon downpours are common, so pack accordingly. Songkran, in mid-April, pushes rates up and is worth avoiding on two wheels altogether given the accident rates.
Thailand drives on the left, so keep to the left and overtake on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do issue on-the-spot fines for riding without one. Speed limits sit around 60 km/h in town and 90 km/h on rural roads. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, dropping to 0.02% for drivers under 20, and roadside checks are routine around holidays. Keep your licence, IDP and rental documents on you at all times — checkpoints are common, and riding without the right licence class typically voids your insurance too.
