Skip the crowded lower-town streets and the taxi queues — the quickest way to feel like you actually own Bergamo for a day is on four wheels. Rent a quad in Bergamo and you can climb straight up to the walled lanes of Città Alta, then keep going past the crowds toward San Vigilio for a sunset over the rooftops, or point yourself north into the Orobie foothills where the real trip begins. Nobody riding a quad has ever had to circle a block looking for parking near the funicular.
Bergamo isn't a flat, easy city, and that's exactly why a quad works so well here. The old town sits on a steep hilltop with narrow, partly pedestrianized streets that a scooter can dart through but that a rental car would waste half an hour parking near. Just beyond the walls, though, the terrain opens into the wooded switchbacks of the Colli park and the long valley roads of Val Seriana and Val Brembana running up into the Orobie Alps — routes with real climbs, curves and distance that reward something sturdier than a 50cc scooter. A quad gives you both: nimble enough for the hill up to the fortress, capable enough for a full day chasing mountain passes.
Licence requirements depend on the machine: lighter quadricycles can be ridden on a moped-level AM licence, while heavier or more powerful models need at least a B1 or a full car (B) licence — ask the operator which class their specific vehicle falls under. Renters are usually expected to be adults, and if your licence was issued outside the EU/EEA you'll need an International Driving Permit alongside it. Expect to leave a deposit, normally as a credit card hold, scaled to the value of the quad, and to hand over a copy of your passport or ID.
Prices move a lot with the season. Our cheapest listing starts around EUR 15/day, and a standard quad typically runs EUR 15–25/day in low season versus EUR 35–60/day in high season, with larger or newer models reaching EUR 60–90/day at peak times.
If you can, aim for May, June, September or early October — warm, dry, and much quieter than midsummer, with easier availability and better rates. July and August bring the highest prices and the busiest roads, plus heat that makes midday riding uncomfortable, so book well ahead if that's your only window. Winter is the low season for a reason: mountain routes like the Presolana pass are only reliably open from late spring to early autumn, and some northern roads require winter tyres or chains.
Italy drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a quad, no exceptions. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside built-up areas, and up to 110–130 km/h on faster roads, though quadricycles may face lower caps depending on their class. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for drivers under 21 or holding a licence for under three years. Watch for ZTL camera zones around Città Alta — ride in without a permit and the fine arrives by post months later.
