Sardinia's northwest coast rewards anyone willing to leave the pavement behind, and there's no better way to do it than on a quad. Rent a quad bike in Alghero and you can be bouncing along the cliffside road to Capo Caccia within twenty minutes of picking up the keys, wind in your face, the limestone headland dropping straight into impossibly blue water below. Push on to the Grotte di Nettuno or carve through the dirt tracks of Porto Conte, and you'll cover in a morning what would take a full day on foot.
This stretch of coast simply isn't built for scooters or bicycles. The road out to Capo Caccia climbs and twists along real cliff edges, the tracks through the nature park turn to gravel and dirt without warning, and summer heat makes pedaling any real distance a chore. A quad shrugs off all of it — it grips the loose surfaces near the towers and the nuraghe, handles the steeper sections with ease, and lets you pull over and park right at each viewpoint instead of circling for a spot.
Requirements depend on the machine: lighter quadricycles can be ridden on a moped-level licence, while heavier or more powerful models call for at least a car licence (category B). Ask your operator which class their vehicle falls under before you book. Renters from outside the EU/EEA should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, and most companies set their own minimum age, usually 18. Expect to leave a deposit, generally held on a credit card, scaled to the value of the quad.
If you want to rent a quad bike in Alghero, budget roughly 15-30 EUR per day in low season and 50-90 EUR per day in high season for a standard two-seat model. Larger or newer quads and buggies can reach 90-130 EUR per day at the peak of summer.
High season runs June through August, peaking hardest in July and August when both prices and crowds are at their maximum — book well ahead if you're planning a summer trip. Low season stretches from November to March, when many coastal operators cut back hours or close altogether. For the best balance of good weather, open trails and fair pricing, aim for May, June, September or early October.
Italy drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a quad, no exceptions by age. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on ordinary roads outside town, though quadricycles may face lower caps depending on their class. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to zero for anyone who has held a licence for less than three years. Keep dipped headlights on at all times when riding outside town, and steer clear of Alghero's ZTL-restricted old town streets unless your route specifically allows it — camera fines for entering without a permit can catch up with renters months later.
