If someday you will be in Ninh Binh, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and public transport. You can always rent a motorcycle in Ninh Binh on our website and explore this landscape of limestone karsts and rice paddies at your own pace — drifting between the towers at Tam Coc, climbing the dragon staircase at Hang Mua for a sunset view, or riding the winding river road through Trang An. A motorcycle is by far the best way to cover the scattered temples, caves and viewpoints that make this one of the most photographed regions in Vietnam.
Ninh Binh’s karst scenery is spread across a wide patchwork of rice fields and river valleys, far too large to explore on foot and often too narrow or too scenic for a car. The back roads that thread between the limestone peaks were built for two wheels, letting you stop wherever a view demands it, and to reach ancient pagodas and forest trails well off the main tourist route.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for engines up to 125cc an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger motorcycles call for a full A-class licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the motorcycle in good condition.
Motorcycle rental in Ninh Binh starts from around 650,000 VND per day for a mid-size machine and runs up to roughly 1,100,000–1,350,000 VND per day for a bigger or newer model. What you pay depends on the engine size and, importantly, on the time of year. Prices in Ninh Binh follow a fairly clear seasonal pattern:
Within any season, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the real peak — that is when the cheapest bikes sell out first and prices edge up. Book a few days ahead to lock in the best rate.
Ninh Binh sits far enough north to have a real winter chill, so December to February can be cool, grey and occasionally drizzly — pack a jacket if you are riding then. Autumn, from September to November, brings clear skies and comfortable temperatures, while spring, especially the turn of May into June, is famous for the rice paddies turning a rich gold before harvest. Summer is hot and humid with the chance of heavy downpours. If you want the classic karst-and-rice-paddy photos, aim for late May or June; if you want reliably dry, comfortable riding weather, choose autumn. Either way, book a few days in advance to guarantee availability.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on the open roads between the karst formations. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Ninh Binh’s back roads are quiet but narrow in places, with buffalo, bicycles and boat touts sharing the same lanes, so ride at a relaxed pace, keep your lights on, and use your horn lightly to signal your presence rather than in anger.
