If someday you will be in Hoi An, Vietnam, do not think that your only options for getting around are walking and the local buses. You can always rent a motorcycle in Hoi An on our website and explore this riverside town and its surroundings at your own pace — drifting through the lantern-lit lanes of the Ancient Town at dusk, riding out to An Bang Beach for the morning, or climbing north toward the Hai Van Pass. A motorcycle is by far the best way to see beyond the old town walls, where rice paddies, fishing villages and quiet coast roads open up within minutes. On this page you will find a full guide to motorcycle rental in Hoi An.
Hoi An itself is small and largely pedestrianised at its historic core, but a motorcycle earns its keep the moment you leave the Ancient Town behind. The surrounding countryside is flat, scenic and easy riding, and everything from the beaches to the mountains is close enough for a half-day loop. Few places in Vietnam reward a rider with so much variety in such a short radius.
Required documents vary between rental companies, but common rules are as follows: you should be at least 18 years old; for engines up to 125cc an A1 licence is usually expected, while larger motorcycles call for a full A-class licence. Foreign visitors should carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) together with their home licence — strictly, a Vietnamese-recognised motorcycle licence is required to ride legally, so check the terms of the specific provider on the booking page. Most companies also ask for a deposit, paid in cash or by card and refunded when you return the motorcycle in good condition.
Motorcycle rental in Hoi An starts from around 650,000 VND per day for a mid-size machine and runs up to roughly 1,100,000–1,350,000 VND per day for a bigger or newer model. What you pay depends on the engine size and, importantly, on the time of year. Prices in Hoi An follow a fairly clear seasonal pattern:
Within any season, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the real peak — that is when the cheapest bikes sell out first and prices edge up. Book a few days ahead to lock in the best rate.
The dry season, from February to August, is the most pleasant time to ride, with sunny days and calm coastal roads, peaking with the summer holiday crowds in June and July. The wet season runs from September to December, when the Thu Bon River can rise and flood parts of the Ancient Town after heavy rain — roads inland and to the beaches are usually still ridable, but it is worth checking local conditions. If you want the best weather, aim for spring or early summer; if you want the best price and don’t mind the occasional downpour, the autumn months are kinder to your wallet.
In Vietnam you ride on the right-hand side of the road. A helmet is compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it, including at checkpoints near the Ancient Town. Speed limits in built-up areas are typically 40–50 km/h, rising on the open roads outside town. There is effectively zero tolerance for drink-driving. Traffic in Hoi An is far calmer than in Vietnam’s big cities, but the historic centre has pedestrian-only zones and narrow lanes where you should walk your bike. Ride defensively, keep your lights on, and give way to pedestrians and cyclists in the old quarter.
