Park the bus schedule and the flip-flops. Cannes rewards anyone willing to twist a throttle: glide along La Croisette past the yachts and the Palais des Festivals with the windows of the Carlton and Martinez sliding by, then climb the cobbles of Le Suquet for a view over the bay that no coach tour will stop long enough for you to enjoy. This is a city built for two wheels, and once you feel the sea air on the Croisette at sunset, you won't want to go back to walking it.
Cannes is deceptively small on a map but murder in a car during the season — La Croisette gridlocks in July and August, parking near the beach clubs is scarce and pricey, and taxis queue as long as everyone else. A scooter cuts straight through it and parks for free almost anywhere. It also opens up trips a bus can't manage easily, like the switchback climb to Super-Cannes or an afternoon run along the coast toward Golfe-Juan — the kind of freedom that makes renting a scooter in Cannes worth it even for a short stay.
For a 50cc scooter (max 45 km/h), you need an AM licence, which anyone with a full car licence already holds. For a 125cc scooter you'll need an A1 motorcycle licence, or a car licence held for at least two years plus a short mandatory training course. Rental companies in Cannes usually set their own minimum age, commonly 18 and sometimes higher for bigger machines. A deposit is standard, taken by card pre-authorisation and refunded on return, with the amount varying by scooter class. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a scooter from around 5–10 EUR per day, while high summer season runs 20–35 EUR per day. Larger or premium 125cc+ models go for 35–50 EUR per day at peak times.
If you're coming for the Film Festival in May or for peak summer in July and August, book well ahead — good scooters sell out fast and prices are at their highest. Outside those windows, spring and early autumn offer warm weather, lighter traffic and noticeably better rates, while the November–February low season is cheapest of all if you don't mind cooler days.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, and must be ECE-approved with reflective stickers. Riding gloves are legally required too — France enforces this more strictly than most countries. Headlights stay on at all times, day and night. In town, the speed limit is 50 km/h, dropping on rural roads and rising to 110–130 km/h on highways you're unlikely to need in Cannes itself. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive.
