Lille rewards anyone willing to wander off the main square, and a scooter is the easiest way to do it. Ride through Vieux-Lille at your own pace, weaving past Flemish gables and independent boutiques, then swing by the Grand Place before heading out toward the Citadelle or the Sunday stalls of Wazemmes. You'll cover in an afternoon what would take a full day on foot — and see far more of the city in the process.

Lille is compact and mostly flat, but its old core is a maze of narrow cobbled streets with very little parking, which makes a car more trouble than it's worth. A scooter slots into tight spaces, threads through the centre with ease, and still gets you out to the greener edges of town — the riverside paths around the Citadelle or the longer hop out to Villeneuve-d'Ascq — without the wait for a bus or tram connection. If you want to rent a scooter in Lille, this is exactly the kind of city that rewards it.

Top 10 things to see in Lille by scooter

  1. Vieux-Lille — cobbled streets, Flemish facades and boutiques, best explored at a slow ride.
  2. Grand Place (Place du Général-de-Gaulle) — the central square with the Colonne de la Déesse, a natural point to start or end your ride.
  3. Citadelle de Lille — a Vauban-built star fortress ringed by parkland and river paths, perfect for a scenic loop.
  4. Parc de la Citadelle / Bois de Boulogne de Lille — wide green space with paved paths along the Deûle river, ideal for an easy cruise.
  5. Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille — one of France's largest fine art museums, just a short ride from the centre.
  6. Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille Cathedral — a striking modern facade tucked into the streets of Vieux-Lille.
  7. Porte de Paris — a 17th-century triumphal arch you'll ride straight past on the way through town.
  8. Quartier de Wazemmes and Marché de Wazemmes — a lively, multicultural market district, best seen on a Sunday morning.
  9. Euralille — the modern business and shopping district by the TGV station, a sharp contrast to the old town.
  10. Villeneuve-d'Ascq — a longer ride east to the LaM modern art museum and its lakes, worth the extra distance.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Lille?

For a 50cc scooter you need an AM licence, available from age 14 after a short training course — though anyone holding a full car or motorcycle licence, or born before 1 January 1988, can ride one without it. Stepping up to a 125cc scooter requires either an A1 motorcycle licence or a category B car licence held for at least two years, plus a mandatory 7-hour training course. Rental companies in Lille often set their own minimum age, commonly 18, and will ask for a security deposit, usually held as a credit card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Lille?

Expect to pay around 5-15 EUR per day during low season, rising to 20-35 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 35-50 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb from June through September, with an extra bump around the Braderie de Lille in early September.
  • November to February is the cheapest stretch, with the lowest daily rates of the year.

When to book a rental scooter in Lille?

If you're after the lowest prices, aim for the winter months between November and February, when demand is quiet and rates drop accordingly. Summer, especially June through September, is Lille's busy season for scooter rental, driven by tourists and the Braderie de Lille street festival — book a few days ahead if you're planning to visit then, since the best-priced scooters go first.

Local traffic rules in Lille

France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers on any scooter, and must be ECE-approved with reflective stickers on the front, back and sides. CE-approved gloves are also a legal requirement for rider and passenger alike, with fines for skipping them. Within Lille's built-up areas the speed limit is 50 km/h, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l — effectively 0.2 g/l, or close to zero, if you're within your first three years of holding a licence. Keep your headlight on at all times, even in daylight, as it's required for scooters throughout France.
