Strasbourg rewards a rider more than most French cities. Its old town is a tangle of canals and cobbled lanes around the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg, too tight and too pretty for a car, and a scooter lets you drift through La Petite France at the pace the half-timbered houses deserve. Cross a bridge and you are in the European quarter within minutes; cross the Rhine and you are in Germany. Few cities pack that much variety into such a small radius.
That compactness is exactly why a scooter fits Strasbourg so well. The old town is flat, the canal loops are short, and parking a car near the cathedral or along the Ill is more trouble than it is worth. On two wheels you can string together the historic centre, the modern glass-and-steel European quarter, and a quick run over the Pont de l'Europe into Kehl in a single afternoon — distances of two to six kilometres that a scooter covers in minutes and walking eats up in hours.
For a 50cc scooter (max 45 km/h) you need an AM licence, available from age 14, or simply a full car or motorcycle licence. Stepping up to 125cc means an A1 motorcycle licence, or a category B car licence held for at least two years plus a short mandatory training course. Rental companies usually set their own minimum age, often 18, regardless of what the law technically allows. Expect to leave a refundable deposit by credit card, and if you're visiting from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence.
Average rental prices run from EUR 5-8 per day in low season up to EUR 10-18 per day in high season, with premium and electric models around EUR 15-25 per day.
High season runs June to August, when the old town fills with visitors and prices sit at their yearly peak — book a few weeks ahead if you want a specific model. Low season, from January to March and again in November, is quieter and noticeably cheaper, so it's a good stretch for a spontaneous booking. Either way, using the search form a little in advance secures the better rates.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, ECE-approved and fitted with reflective stickers, and CE-approved gloves are legally required too — France actually enforces this. Dipped headlights stay on at all times. In town the speed limit is 50 km/h, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero for riders still in their first three years of licence. Strasbourg also runs a low-emission zone, so check your scooter carries the right Crit'Air sticker.
